Last I remember, it is a neutron charged with more than 1 Mega electron volt (MeV). They serioiusly slow down when colliding with things of near-equivalent mass, such as hydrogen nuclei. Anthing with lots of water would interfere with the signal, and in large enough numbers, would likely kill it.
