They have a US subsidiary, FNH USA in SC that makes those. Beretta has Beretta USA that used tio be in MD to make the M9. I beleived they have movedout of MD.

I’m wondering if the real reason for the belt is to make it harder for civilians to reload used brass?

Don’t they shoot .223? Having to carry 2 different kinds of ammo is the wrong move for soldiers.

$2 million a year? Really? Something does not seem right. Never says for how many weapons that I could see.

This smells as if the 'big guy' or the Taliban isn't getting their cut.

Doesn’t FN manufacture the M249? I believe they have a facility in NC.

I’m kinda partial to my 300 Blackout with eleven inch barrel. The gas port is so open that I can feed it 200 grain sub-sonic and even run a blast diverter on the muzzle.

There is no reason to go to 6.8 except for novelty.

As Fai Mao mentioned in Post 33, the caliber change may be due to the need to penetrate body armor.

From 2018:

https://uklandpower.com/2018/10/31/the-us-army-special-operations-command-usasoc-6-5-mm-precision-intermediate-calibre/

"The 6.8 mm ammunition around which future weapons are to be designed are likely to generate much higher chamber pressures “to ensure that the rounds can still blast through enhanced enemy body armor at up to 600 metres.” Such performance is expected to be achieved by using pressures similar to those of a tank gun, i.e. up to 550 MPa (80,000 psi), instead of usual 5.56 mm pressures of 380 MPa (55,000 psi) for the M855 and 420 MPa (60,000 psi) for the M855A1."

The quote in the article says 6.8mm but the link and the rest of the article cites 6.5mm.

I can see that as a definite plus. But $20 million over 10 years is chicken feed for an arms procurement. This is a long-term test using specialist units as the beta testers.

Okay, gotcha. I wonder if the Marines will hold onto their A-4’s and M4’s longer than the Army does. The Marines adopt equipment more slowly than the Army.

Needs to penetrate body armor at up to 650 yards? And that is because....?

Just asking. Seems like overkill of specifications.

but I do wonder about metal fatigue on the rifle.>>>>>>>>>>>>

Yes, I have wondered how the breach of the barrell can handle the over pressure when it sees the continuous use for many hours in battle.I do feel that there may be some breach problems of full seating when the weapon gets really hot, and perhaps cooked off rounds, and stovepiping. Its the rare rifle candidate that does not do that in extremis. I bet that barrel gets so really hot, thius the shroud.

My feeling is thatthis is a meetro sexual rifle, Its all about looks, target range , and status without the test of battle conditions.

As you can see , I am quite skeptical. We need our sons and daughters armed with the best and I suspect this is not it.

Dittos, $20 mil is a minor, very minor, R&D project. Nothing to see here.

A couple of years ago, SIG released the specs. Early reviews had it as unpleasant to shoot.

It feels like they are trying to make a short barreled carbine with capabilities of a long rifle. That means high pressure.
What will the blow back be like? Fouling?

Seems like we are going full circle back to a battle rifle when our average soldier is less able to control it

Sig makes some good gear. But there really isn’t anything wrong with the platforms we currently have.

If they don't spend the money now, it won't be there in future budgets.

The military has never reloaded it’s brass. Not in training ammo and never picked up used battlefield ammo for reloading. In short the military could care less if the cases are reloaded to them they are a single use consumable item. Russia and China since the 1940s have used steel cased berdan primed non reloadable cases because they are half the price of brass and they too could not give two hoots about reloading. These cases most certainly will never be reloadable that’s by design make the case just strong enough to hold 80,000psi once and leave it on the battlefield. Only civys care about reloading this round is not for civys its a long distance man killer for real assault rifles and belt feed light infantry weapons two things civilians won’t ever get to play with in this caliber as every FA weapon will be post 1986 they are off limits to civilians. One could get a upper for a pre 1986 AR10perhaps but then getting past the heavy price tag of the bimetal single use ammo would make it a Elon Musk type you.
