Yersinia Pestis was always the best suspect, and definitive proof helps to redirect attention to other issues. It also makes sense of oddities like why lavender farmers were mostly immune: routine contact with the essential oils from their crop made them repellant to the fleas that carry plague.

Keep looking farther east as the original origin. The Bubonic Plague (yersinia pestis) came to the United States in the 1800s from Chinese trade ships and originated in Yunnan province. It’s still around in the desert southwest and we get an occasional case.
