A brother and sister say they had to stop 6 times in one day to charge their rented Tesla in cold weather after the battery drained quickly

Xaviar and Alice Steavenson wanted to find out what it's like to drive a Tesla, so they rented one from Hertz for a trip from Orlando, Florida, to Wichita, Kansas.

They say they knew the electric car would need charging en route — and expected it to take longer after the weather turned so cold in late December — but what the siblings didn't expect was just how often they'd need to plug it in.

Xaviar Steavenson told Insider it got to the point that the "battery would drain faster than it would charge."

I thought everyone knew by now to not use heat in the winter or AC in the summer with a plug in electric car. Use heat or AC only on cars powered by hydrocarbons, not coal.

“ All of the bad stories about Tesla seem to have come after Elon Musk bought Twitter”

A curious coincidence.

Its like solar power.

It works, but really only works optimally in certain areas.

The poor performance of chemical batteries in cold weather is a fundamental limitation of the technology. Super capacitors fare better but shorting out a super capacitor with enough stored energy to transport a two ton road vehicle for 400 miles in a crash is going to be a very energetic event

A flywheel might store sufficient energy.....but only on a straight road,

Virtually all new car ads you see on TV are for EVs! Virtually all of the ads admit that the maximum range per charge is 300+ miles. That means the maximum range per charge is less than 400+ miles which is what my current polluter gets, so it comes down to charge time versus pump time. For my annual 1500 mile trip to and from Florida pump time wins hands down. When battery range improves to 600+ miles I’ll reconsider — but don’t count on it.

“Did they seriously not to expect to encounter major problems with this decision?”

Some people are not at all familiar with the technology. They are now.

Twitter may save the day for all of us, but I worry because Elon’s EV’s aren’t gonna’ make it long term and pay the way.

Word will spread of cold weather issues, evacuation disasters waiting to happen, infrastructure inadequacies, scarce materials, and repair/replacement costs, to name a few issues.

Unless Musk is cooking up another energy source, I can’t see it lasting.

They were asking for it when they rented a Tesla to drive to Kansas in the middle of the Winter. It’s a fair weather car. I’d rather have a hybrid than an EV.

I have an uncle who is a landlord. He drives short trips between properties all the time. He’s the perfect customer for a Tesla.

I don’t think it is an issue with a cold battery per se. I think the battery is drained faster when the interior heater is used. Wear arctic gear, and don’t turn the heater on.
