Good main point. The public actions and statements (like "content of character, not color of skin") of Dr. King make him a great historical figure in my book.

Maybe he was good or bad behind the scenes, but as you say his public persona and statements were all American and good and classically conservative and individual-oriented vs. collectivist (despite "red" claims - whatever).

What the FBI says means nothing to me. They are one of the most politicized and evil organizations in the modern world.

A decade later, King returned to the question of communism. In his Sept. 30, 1962, sermon “Can a Christian Be a Communist?” at Ebenezer Baptist Church, he makes clear that Christianity cannot be reconciled with communism but at the same time welcomes Marx’s critique of profit motives. Communism offers “a necessary corrective for a Christianity that has been all too passive and a democracy that has been all too inert,” King suggests. He went on to raise the issue of wealth inequality — “One-tenth of 1 percent of the population of this nation controls almost 50 percent of the wealth, and I don’t mind saying that there’s something wrong with that.” In this sermon, as with his letter to his beloved, King draws a clear distinction between being a communist and a Christian while upholding a sustained Marxist critique of capitalism, which had a long history in Christian socialism.

A coworker blurted out to another “did you know that Martin Luther King plagiarized his doctoral thesis?”

I think it was in Chronicles magazine that I read two theses from the archive at the institution in question (B.U.?).

One was credited to King, and the other to a graduate from a decade or two earlier. The King text was identical to the older thesis--right down to some punctuation errors I noticed.
