Chinese players of roleplaying epic "World of Warcraft" bade a sad farewell to the land of Azeroth on Monday (Jan 23), with the game set to go offline after a dispute between US developer Blizzard and local partner NetEase.

Massively popular worldwide, particularly in the 2000s, "World of Warcraft" - often abbreviated as WoW - is an online multiplayer role playing game set in a fantasy-Medieval world where good battles evil.

It is known for its immersive and addicting gameplay, and players can rack up hundreds of hours of game time.

I played world of Warcraft for several years and really enjoyed it. I think I quit around 2012 because it’s a huge waste of time when I should be outdoors and having fun instead. I do miss it, but I won’t go back to those kinds of games.

Heh. I figured it was because of piracy.
When I lived there in 2005 I bought a copy StarCraft at a retail giant only to discover that it was a pirated version. I emailed Blizzard and the CEO at the time replied with a request that I provide them my mailing address and send them photos of the packaging along with my receipt. A few weeks later I received a legitimate copy of the game.

That's the reason I refuse to play videogames in the first place. Not that I consider myself superior to anybody but they just have a way of sucking you in and keeping you from doing the things you ought to be doing in life, such as getting fresh air, meeting real people, reading some good books, etc.

Back in the early 1990s when computers were just starting to be in everybody's homes, I briefly got hooked on the ID games like Wolfenstein 3-D and DOOM. I remember being up until 2 or 3 am playing those with my wife sleeping next door and my kids long since put to bed. And me having to get up in a few hours to go to work.

I realized it was a very unhealthy habit and so was able to stop. I think Quake (also by ID) was the very last game I played and that would have been around 1994 or 1995.

After that, nothing, except an occasional game of Freecell or Minesweeper while stuck on some incredibly boring conference call at work.

WoW kept track of minutes played. I know I’ve played over 400 days of WoW. Over a year of my life spent playing that game. lol

I haven’t played in a while, but I don’t regret it. I made some good friends and memories.

I played for a while many years back. I traveled heavily and worked minimum of 12 hour days every day and often more. Then when you count the bad diet and heavy drinking ubiquitous to a band of traveling engineers, I would then play from midnight till 4 or 5 in the morning and be back at the plant skipping breakfast in favor of sleep by 8 AM for another 12 to 16. Needless to say it took its toll. I had to get back outside to the desert and completely decompress

I had a friend who lives in Indiana and I live in Illinois, we had a blast playing Battlefield games on Xbox for a long time, we would catch up, tell jokes and generally have fun, harmless fun, and once in a while we would blow stuff up and shoot at things in the game. Video games are just fine, in moderation.

it doesn’t matter, it will make it even worse for USA servers as flood of red army join to add to the already rampant bots that exists on us servers.

Likewise. I had a fun time in WoW. I came to a point that I realized I’d rather be doing other things with that time. I think I had over 365 days of play time too.

I always liked playing old Infocom or point-and-click style adventure games since the 1980s. I’m Looking for and playing those types of games again.
