BestBuy still offers stock in receivers and BluRay players that exceeds most other retailers. I update about every 3 years to keep up with new encoding formats on BluRay and decoders on the receivers. My last purchase was Sony branded items and I haven't seen much beyond the Atmos features that argues for an update. I'm still getting firmware updates on both devices that are keeping pace with industry standards.
I’m old. Decoders and BluRay ... ???
We have VHS.
I still listen to cassettes on a Walkman — cassettes that we listened to in ‘71 on the Alcan where there were no radio stations asking the way.
Since Best Buy stopped stocking Windows 7 PCs I don’t go much anymore.
Makes sense. Just not getting the traffic especially due to the growth of Amazon.
We finally got a Costco within driving distance; about 30 minutes away. I bought Beau a membership for his birthday this fall - and I get to use it, too.
Anyhow, there’s so much stuff in that store that I DON’T need, but with the economy tanking, we decided to do a major stock-up on everyday things that it seems we’re always running short of - shampoo, toothpaste, dish soap, razors, laundry supplies, trash bags, vitamins & OTC pain meds, honey, EVOO, tissues, etc.
Granted, it was a $500 layout, but it’s really nice not having to buy those things in with the groceries each week. Beau brought his calculator and did all the ‘maths’ for me as to what was the best overall deal on any given item. He enjoys that stuff. ;)
I always thought stocking up was silly (other than for emergency supplies/Prepper stuff) and it tied up too much money, but these days you really need to plan ahead for every bloody thing!
Also - great price on eggs. I bought 6 dozen (limit) and got them for 26 cents each, versus the 42 cents each I’d been paying by the dozen, locally.
I missed getting that ‘Shopping Gene’ that most women have, so I’m not shedding any tears over any stores or restaurants that are going out of business these days, other than the fact that I 100% specifically blame the CovidBS-19 SCAM, as well as Mother Government, in general. ;)
I do have VHS players around and a collection of movies. Most of those old movies have replacements on DVD today, so there has been no urgent need to hookup the VHS decks.
Some of the oldest technology that remained in my dad's equipment was a 1950s Fisher FM tuner. Mono only, but it had a discriminator output. My dad purchased an FM stereo decoder (all tubes in 1961) to decode the new FM stereo broadcasts. He purchased a Sherwood audio amp (all tubes) to drive the stereo speakers. Pretty fancy for 1961. The FM radio tuner/stereo decoder fits on a 2" x 2" PC board today.
When I was 5 and my dad was deployed on a ship, we would receive a little 3 inch reel to reel tape that dad created on the ship. I would thread it into the reel to reel deck and we would listen to dad's latest message. 1961 tech. It served us well through the years of extended ship deployments.
Interesting!
I had to leave my reel-to-reel Teac behind when I moved a long time ago. I loved that thing.
My 8 track recorder is a Panasonic device. I can still play the old 8-track tapes, but I can't get blanks anymore. A similar thing has happened to my BluRay recorders. I have devices that can do double layer/double side recording. Another has double layer recording on one side, and laser etch capability on the label side. Wonderful capability, but the media vendors aren't keeping the shelves stocked anymore.
I don’t usually go for boycotts, but it was a no brainer with BB&B. I only used them for wedding presents and only because the brides thought BB&B was classy.
But when they stepped in dogshit, BB&B was just off my list. They never had anything unique that I wanted anyway, unlike Coca Cola which would be a sacrifice for me.
I think a lot of customers had the same thing going. Asking “why should I do any business with these asswipes when their stuff can be had anywhere.”
Good riddance.
As a followup to my post 35: apparently BBB is closing their store in Aiken County, SC.
This story in the Aiken Standard has the details:
