I believe your guess is correct, so far. And I have no "benefit of the doubt" for the USA here.
We were doing something the Russians did not like and they did something to stop it. I do not believe it was luck that prevented damage to the Russian craft. I believe they maneuvered in front of the drone and dropped a cloud of something that was intended to disable it.
I doubt very much that they clipped the propeller with any part of their aircraft. That reeks of a cover story to make the Russians look less competent. Merely propaganda spin. It is dangerous for us to believe our own propaganda.
The game goes on. We will send more drones. The Russians will experiment with ways to down them that are inexpensive and have plausible deniability.
I do not feel outrage over any of it.
The game ends with Ukraine beating the Russians. Or maybe with the Russians beating Ukraine. I cannot really tell just yet. The political leadership of either the USA or Russia will be replaced as a consequence of the outcome.
