Herod was a monster, who ruthlessly persecuted Christians and Jews alike, slew Jewish sages, and even had his own wife and children executed, but he was quite the builder!

In addition to Caesarea, he also re-built the 2nd Temple, which stood less than 100 years before his Roman masters destroyed it and genocided the Jews of Judea. He also built Masada, where Jewish rebels against Rome made their last stand; and the fortress of Herodium, in the Judean desert (below).
