This is the nail-biting moment that a crane crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge - leaving a steel beam cracked as shocked locals recorded the incident.

The barge hit the iconic New York City bridge at 8am on Wednesday morning, causing a rupture in the bottom structure. But engineers said that it caused no structural damage.

The boat was carrying a crane when it struck the side of the landmark.

Michelle Krupa with the Coast Guard Operations Unit said: 'A crane barge was traveling underneath the bridge and a crane struck a track system underneath the bridge for the maintenance.'

Speaking about the damage, she said: 'Not serious damage, it did look like some damage to the track system.'

The FDNY also confirmed that there was no structural or integrity damage to the suspension bridge.

No one was injured during the ordeal, and the bridge is still open to the public.

Officials are still investigating the situation.

The steel wide flange section depicted is clearly shown to not be supporting the structure. The steel members running at right angles to the damaged section are connected to the suspension cables and are supporting the bridge.

There are no actual “beams” depicted. The damaged steel is said to be part of a track but no further info is given
