PETER HITCHENS thinks the UK's worst convicted child killer could well be innocent
UK Daily Mail ^ | Peter Hitchens

Horror can make us blind to doubt. For years I angrily scorned Chris Mullin's campaign for the release of the Birmingham Six, Irishmen wrongly convicted of the 1974 IRA bombings in that city.

I was so furious about the filthy cruelty of the crime that I could not see straight about the weakness of the prosecution.

I apologise to Mr Mullin, and learned from him that our justice system is not as good as we like to think.

So now I must ask: What if Lucy Letby is not guilty? Actually I very much wish somebody else in the national media would raise this. I have enough enemies as it is. But it looks as if it falls to me. Would it be bearable if her conviction was mistaken? This young woman has been condemned to die in prison. She has, since her conviction, been subjected to some very severe public condemnation. She has had to endure the (wholly justified and understandable) anger and grief of the parents of the babies she has been convicted of killing.

KEYWORDS:
Letby (a nurse) was convicted by a jury of murdering 7 infants and has sparked a debate about bringing back hanging.

In this case the judge accepted a majority verdict from the jury so it didn't have to be unanimous. The judge said he would accept a 10-1 verdict after days of deliberations (one juror was apparently discharged)

This trial lasted 9 months ...

Hitchens is basing his argument on the fact that she gave evidence in her trial over several days in her defense (unusual), close friends believe in her and she is appealing the conviction and steadfastly maintaining her innocence.

Is that enough of an argument? I dont know.

The best that we can do, and should do, is prosecute cases when there is no reasonable doubt that can be made.

As long as we have done that, we’ve done our job.

If we make mistakes, people should be compensated. However, we can’t not prosecute if it cannot be done perfect.

When you have multiple infants die in your care, you are the problem.

She’s guilty as sin.

The case was very complex and the trial lasted many months

Detectives pieced together shift patterns, mortality rates at the hospital etc. to “catch” her.

However she is maintaining her innocence.

It does make you think.

Criminals can convince themsslves they are not guilty.

Regular people can do it as well. Narcissists are great at blame shifting and gaslighting and guilt shaming. Perpetual victims (everyone is against me types) are great at it. Karens are great at it.

However, we can’t not prosecute if it cannot be done perfect.

By that criteria, we wouldn't be able prosecute anyone. We can go full Soros DA.

That’s the standard the left wants. Absolute certainty in the prosecution before a case can be prosecuted.
