You are wrong.
Look at the link I had in comment #19
“Not especially relevant to pickemup trucks.”
Not in a free market. But once you have a command-and-control, top-down economy dictated by government idiots, this is what you get.
It doesn’t. see post #19 link.
> The Chevy Volt came very close
That was what I read.
Chrysler used to be good at engineering. They built a turbine powered car 60 years ago.
I think the confusion is about the “drive by wire” feature where the _controls_ (NOT the wheels) are only connected to the gas engine electronically. The entire drive mechanism is pretty innovative.
Here’s some info on the modes of energy transmission:

Engine & motor drive (Moderate acceleration)
ICE -> wheels
ICE -> MG1 -> MG2 -> wheels
Engine drive with charge (Highway driving)
ICE -> wheels
ICE -> MG1 -> HVB
Engine and motor drive with charge (Heavy power situation such as in steep hills)
ICE -> wheels
ICE -> MG1 -> HVB
ICE -> MG1 -> MG2 -> wheels
Full power or gradual slowing (Maximum power situations)
ICE -> wheels
ICE -> MG1 -> MG2 -> wheels
HVB -> MG2 -> wheels
FWIW from Bing chat:
Yes, the Prius engine connects to the drivetrain. The Prius has a power split device which includes a gearbox connecting the generator, gas engine, and electric motor. The Prius Gen 2 was the first to have this device. A ring gear attaches to the electric motor and transfers the motor’s power to a reduction gear on the final drive
No. This guy goes thru the entire transmission of the Prius.
The motor is not connected.

145 mi range on battery. Well within the range of the vast majority of commuters. Those who have access to free/subsidized charging at work or home can commute cheap and comfortably, and still have a truck that can actually tow their boat/trailer/toys on the weekend. Existing electric trucks can’t do this. If RAM pulls this off, Ford and GM will follow. When camping off the grid, it would be nice to have a 92kwh battery.
Whatever, sir.

Don’t you think a standalone generator would be a lot cheaper? And give you separable functionality and reliability between your truck and your electricity needs?
But go ahead and buy one. I am gonna laff when I see you go by with an empty bed 99% of the time and blow black smoke you paid a thousand bucks to add, and fake engine windup noises. Ok.
Ok you are right the current version does lock the engine to the transmission.
But the previous versions of the Prius absolutely did operate with no mechanical connection, so it is possible.

From the responses, common sense, or any good sense, have gone out the window at least 20% here.
> it is possible
Of course it is possible. Trains have worked this way since the 40s or so.
The Pious sought maximum efficiency along with being a nice car.
Adding the mechanical coupling improved efficiency.
it’s for camping...
You need 130 kW for camping? You realize a full-house backup generator is only 10 to 20 kW? You can carry a 1 kW generator with a handle, and it will do a lot while camping.
Remember the K car? It was another Dodge / Chrysler morphodite vehicle. They couldn’t bury that POS fast enough.
That's what I currently use. actually, 2 of them that can be used alone or paralleled. I don't typically run them at night, as I'm in the wild to enjoy peace, quiet and the beautiful outdoors. Mostly I use them when needed to charge my LiFePO 4 batteries, or run the AC if it's really hot, and sometimes to power the toaster or microwave for breakfast.
The second paragraph of your comment is just retarded. I'm unlikely to buy one of these trucks. I currently drive a diesel pickup, and that will hopefully last another decade. It's my tow vehicle, not a work truck, so yes, the bed is empty most of the time and it's occasionally used as a "grocery getter". But it tows my boat and camper like a dream, where my F-150 struggled.
Why don’t they just make a little more room for everyone in the car and install petals so they can help recharge the batteries?
