The thing to remember about Maverick 2 is that the combat part is a pretty good “war game” study of what it might take to knock out Iran’s nukes. Break out your map of Iran and you can see how the mountains might be an issue. And the dead giveaway that it’s about Iran is the end when Mav escapes in an F-14. Iran is the only country that might be keeping a few operational.
Maverick was an O-3 (Navy lieutenant) in the first film. In the second, he’s an O-6 (Navy captain) and has been one for far too long. There is a bit of dialog at the beginning about how he should have been an O-8 (Navy rear admiral) if he hadn’t stayed where he was in Naval aviation.
