My brother showed up to his first interview at McDonalds wearing a suit. They didn't hire him. I showed up at a dotCom wearing a suit and looked like a right prick surrounded with Gen-Xers in plaid and denim. I didn't get that job either.

Going door to door to a variety of businesses, some hiring minimum wage while others are looking for people with multiple degrees, is not a great strategy. Best to drop by ahead of time to scope out the territory.

One of my former students applied for a job with a computer gaming company. He had an interview and asked me if he should wear a suit. For this particular company I suggested he call HR and speak with the secretary and ask her (him?) what is appropriate dress for a job candidate. She told him the firm’s employees dressed in plaid and denim and he should dress the same. He did! He got the job!!

I always told my student if you are uncertain about what to wear call and find out.
