I don’t disagree about the large cities themselves, but metro areas include the surrounding suburbs, some of which can be quite nice, safe, and affordable.
Housing and the livability of an area are markets, and what one brings to the table makes all the difference.

Given the current state of affairs and the trajectory we’re on, living in any metro area could prove to be not just a bad choice, but potentially a fatal one.No-one in his/her/their right mind would buy a cheap house in Pittsburgh, unless he/she/they had a suicidal desire to live in a drug-infested war zone. A house in Ukraine would probably be safer. (n.b. I live about 80 miles from PIT.)
