I could rebuild a small engine and had read the Rise and Fall of the 3rd Reich, and the history of the allied bombing campaign over Europe (among many) by the time I was 12.
In the 1910-20 era there were schools where you learned drafting and basic mechanics in ~9th grade and graduated having manufactured a working engine from scratch.
George Washington had his first business when he was ~12/13 year old.
