I was looking at the Baltimore port on Google to see if any companies I recognize are in the area that is blocked off by the bridge. I am trying to think proactively on which products we use daily that might be impacted soon by the interruption in the supply chain. Major source of imported sugar.
There are large food producers in the area. https://www.glassdoor.com/Explore/top-food-and-beverage-manufacturing-companies-baltimore_II.4,35_IIND200071_IL.46,55_IM63.htm
Looking at the aerial photos of the bridge area, I noticed that there’s a high voltage power line that also crosses the patapsco River adjacent to the Key Bridge. There’s a tower from which the power lines are suspended, and it has a pretty stout looking barrier around it.
Granted, the barriers probably aren’t stout enough to protect against a container ship of this size, but its interesting that Baltimore Gas & Electric had the wherewithal to protect their transmission assets while the Maryland DOT did not.

Non-combustive materials can travel through tunnels, so the bridge shouldn’t affect their transport too much.
