Eclipse Travelers Outraged Over Last-Minute Hotel Cancellations
Daily Beast ^ | 4/5/24 | Amanda Yen

Surprise hotel cancellations in Buffalo, New York, darkened dozens of visitors’ eclipse-viewing plans, ending their stays in one of the prime viewing spots for the April 8 solar eclipse before they even began. Multiple would-be guests told WIVB that their plans to stay at Buffalo’s Aloft hotel were abruptly canceled just one week before their planned trip due to overbooking by travel agencies and third-party sites like Booking.com. Some of the travelers had made their reservations up to two years before the planned visit, when they first learned that Buffalo would be in the path of the eclipse, a New Jersey travel agency said. Patricia Paterson, who planned a reunion with her siblings around the eclipse, described the cancellation as “infuriating” and suspected the hotel was trying to price-gouge because of the unusual tourism boost. “They can make a big buck for what they’re charging for one night about what we had booked for a three night stay,” she said.

Just like the Harold Camping predictions and the 2012 end of the world scam.

Those all sound like fun options. Will see which ingredients I have on hand or can buy easily.

This is called breach of contract. Would be surprised if they don’t sue and win.

First world problems…

Not really.

Either a contract means something or it does not. If it does not the entire structure is going to fall down.

In this case the contract not being kept is just a minor annoyance to those who got shafted. But once you get a reputation for not keeping your side of a bargain people see no reason why they should keep theirs with you. And once people get the idea that contracts can be broken at any point just because it can get very bad.

Agreements being made and kept are the foundation of all human interaction.

Imagine all this fuss and the eclipse ends up being obscured by clouds.

Which is likely to happen. It's been cloudy around here for days and while I saw some sun this morning, it has clouded up once again here in Connecticut.

Northeast is almost always cloudy or at least partly cloudy this time of year.

I’ve seen two full eclipes in my life, and never the hysteria that this last has engendered.

It seems contrived.

I'm not even in the path of the total eclipse and those drinks sound good. Guess I'm doing some day drinking tomorrow.

For classic rock music fans, DJ Earle Bailey is doing a six hour show of deep classic rock featuring songs about the moon and the sun.

"Sisters Of The Moon" by Fleetwood Mac and "Invisible Sun" by The Police are just two examples of songs that will be featured.

Available on "Deep Tracks" at Sirius/XM from 11 to 5 tomorrow - and then on-demand thereafter.

Friends, booking.com is the absolute worst site on the internet for travel. DO NOT use them. Please. You MIGHT get lucky and not have a problem, but if you do, you’ll NEVER get to a human that can help you. You’ll run around in circles for a month. Here’s the game: You call the call center (in India, or at least staffed by people with Indian accents), and you get a long hold. You’ll finally get a person and you’ll tell them in detail what your problem in. They can’t help you, they’ll pass your info along to tier 2 and have them call you back. A week passes, no one calls you back. You call them back, sit in the queue, and the person that finally answers the phone will act like they know nothing about your case. (You give them all the info, they’ll act like it’s the first time you’ve called). You give them the info in detail, and they tell you that they’ve passed your info along to tier 2. This will happen as many times as you let it. I called DAILY for over 2 weeks, and was FINALLY able to get a callback. It was for a flight, and the airline said “Since you booked it with booking.com, they have to initiate any refund requests, looking at your flight details, it WOULD be refundable”. Booking.com told me over and over that my flight WASN’T refundable.

Anyway, PLEASE do yourself a favor and avoid these idiots.

Great comeback. I can’t drink tequila. Bad things happen when I do.

Thanks for the tip! I’ll see if we can provide music for the group, if anyone’s interested. We have portable Bluetooth speakers.

I just think with social media, everything is a big deal, over documented, over analyzed, over hyped. Some people’s need to fill a void in their lives, I guess.

I tried to book a room in northern Vermont/southern Quebec...nothing available. So for me it will be 4 hours up...and hour there...and then 4 hours home.

If you don’t book directly with the hotel, but do it through a booking website, I think the cancellation policy is in the fine print. I’ve seen this happen before lots of times.

and then 4 hours home

If you're driving, it isn't going to be 4 hours home. More like 10 to 12 hours.
