A fine and detailed presentation at Cal Tech many years ago addressed the red shift and SETI, and came to quite the same conclusion. There is one bandwidth due to the red shift and gravitational bending in which “noise” is mostly absent, and any reasonably advanced species wishing to send a receivable message would do so. Silence in that bandwidth. But the other imagination-sparking theories are so tasty and exciting.... We are very, very likely alone. On God's green and wonderful earth.

I happen to believe that in the vastness of space, there are other intelligent species, though they are likely very different from us. I do not, however, believe that there has ever been any kind of reasonable proof that they have visited this planet in the past, or in the present.

Probably alone? No, we absolutely ARE alone, to the extent that if intelligent, self-aware life exists elsewhere in the universe (which it almost certainly does), we will never know of its existence, or they of ours. The distances are simply too great.
