Michael Porter Jr.'s brother will never be allowed to play in the NBA again
Whilst much of the on-court focus has been on the start of the NBA's annual play-in tournament to determine the final participants in the playoffs, the league has released a bombshell statement on Wednesday confirming that Jontay Porter has been given a lifetime ban.
Porter, the brother of Michael Porter Jr., was involved in a gambling scandal that was investigated by the league.
In their findings they determined that Jontay Porter had 'manipulated his participation in a game to influence the outcome of a bet'.
Porter was also accused of betting on NBA games, which he has subsequently been found guilty of as a result of the NBA's internal investigation.
What next for Jontay Porter?
Michael Porter Jr. had previous rallied against any suggestions his brother was guilty in the matter, however the 24-year-old will now have to face the professional consequences of his actions.
It's a shame as at such a young age, Porter was working towards a promising NBA career with the Toronto Raptors, whilst also learning his trade in numerous spells with their G-League affiliate team.
The NBA investigation found that Jontay Porter had placed at least 13 bets on NBA games from January through March of 2024, although none of those games involved him.
However, that isn't where Porter's involvement in the betting scandal ended, which is ultimately why he has been given such a heavy punishment.
The investigation found that before the Raptors played on March 20, Porter informed someone who he knew was an NBA bettor about his injury status, whilst another person closely associated with the player was able to put on an $80,000 bet on Porter to score under a certain number of points.
This bet was particularly egregious as the individual involved won $1.1 million, but he was well aware that Porter would be limiting his own game participation in order to influence the outcome of the bets he knew had been placed.
"There is nothing more important than protecting the integrity of NBA competition for our fans, our teams and everyone associated with our sport," NBA commissioner Adam Silver declared in an official statement.
"This is why Jontay Porter's blatant violations of our gaming rules are being met with the most severe punishment.
"While legal sports betting creates transparency that helps identify suspicious or abnormal activity, this matter also raised important issues about the sufficiency of the regulatory framework currently in place, including the types of bets offered on our games and players."
The “Pete Rose” of the new millennia... the corporations aren’t messing around when they say No gambling. It’s a litigation issue and players who gamble are just highly paid piss ants who don’t have a job any longer.
Cutting in on mafia action is an actionable offense. Simply letting the offenders go saves a lot of Hazmat cleanup.
Absolutely. Betting on the game will be this generations PED scandal.
Jontay Porter screwed up. He should have hired an “interpreter”.
You have tp be kidding.
Kidding? If I was kidding I would have said something like letting him go and cutting his thumbs off.
