I knew one of the Gygax’s close relatives. Nice guy but he didn’t have much to say about them either way.
The cartoon was rather good and deserved a longer run.

I still play rpg’s. Neverwinter Nights was a great pc representation of D&D. Dragon Age Origins, Fallout, Final Fantasy, Earthbound...so many good memories over the years.

My friends used to play this back in the day but I never really “got it”.

Hero games was a far more precise system. Not for those challenged with math but you KNEW what your character could do. Aside from that, Pathfinder is fairly playable, but I do miss the old modules.

Have played D&D a few times over the years, always had a lot of fun. The last time was in 2001 as the plague was retreating. Six of us came to the table as strangers and left as cohorts. I think we gave the dungeon master a hard time though. In the end the mansion we were trying to raid turned out to be an enormous mimic that we barely escaped the mouth of. Good times!
I could say something about the leftism that Wizards of the Coast has been letting creep into the game, though...

Helping write the 1st edition of AD&D is probably the greatest thing I've ever done in my life. I'm named in the credits for the Players Handbook and the Dungeon Masters Guide, and am the hoariest old gaming grognard I've ever heard. Gary Gygax even sent me a gorgeously painted dragon to put on top of my wedding cake.
Started in 1961 at age 12 when my oldest brother gave me his copy of Avalon Hill's _Tactics II_ on going into the service, first playtested for Jim Dunnigan in 1966 (Avalon Hill's _Jutland_) and have credits in board wargames, RPG's, computer games and science-fiction novels. Even snuck a scene into a movie - the fire extinguisher finale to the otherwise awful _The Net_ starring Sandra Bullock.
All as a hobby just to have fun, and share it.

Hasbro killed D&D, which took some doing since there was a huge resurgence during and after Covid. Google Hasbro OGL scandal, if interested.

I tried playing a few times, but could not get into it, and was slightly scared by how deeply the others got into it. Both of my kids play regularly now, as do several work colleagues. I’m content to play Might & Magic 6,7 & 8 over and over again on PC - the game engine is loosely based on D&D but don’t have to embarass myself role playing.
