Then 9/11 and I almost had my serrated edge knife confiscated due to serrated edge, but they relented and let me fly with it the last time.

Were the TSA guys also al Qaeda or something?

I think the old rule allowed knives with blades shorter than 3" or maybe 3.5". The rule banning serrated blades happened in the middle of my trip and the air port screeners were used to only screening for guns and explosives...they were confused too...and I was a frequent flier with multi 100k miles so they let me go. A plain edge would still have been OK.
