What books are you packing to take to the beach this year?
Or are you just going to "hang out"?

Good Morning ping......
To: daisyscarlett
g'morning,,, or, in my case,,,, good night. I'm off to bed. Hope to get Ann's latest book read soon, but I have a pretty busy schedule ahead. It's not likely there will be a movie made of it anytime soon.

I am just finishing 'Love, Greg and Lauren', the story of the woman at the Twin Towers who had flaming jet fuel land on her. Great book. Next on my list is 'Slander' by Ann Coulter, then 'P is for Peril' by Sue Grafton. After that a book called 'Mormons and Muslims.' I like to read...

I have read the Evanovich and Grafton books - good beach books. Also SEABISCUIT which I highly recommend to anyone who loves horses. Have the Adams book but will not read it at the beach. Am considering the Coulter book. DEFINITELY NOT considering the Marlo Thomas book. Have read the juicy exerpts of the McEnroe books (Wow! Tatum O'Neal is a mess!)....
To: daisyscarlett
I read an interview with Tatum O'Neal, and she allows that she has been clean 'for a few months.' Sad story...

I don't have much time to read books anymore between reading FR, my junk mail and magazine subscriptions but one book that does stand out in my memory that was excellent reading was Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier.

'nite IG. Sorry you missed the HLL thread on Sat. It was deleted once, then restored and then evidently deleted again. I only got to read parts of it and then poof it was gone...lol

You always have an ambitious reading list. Have you heard anything about Laura's National Book Fair for this year? Will there be one, I wonder....last year it ended on 9/09 and I always wondered if any of those people on the plane from D.C. on 9/11 were returning home after attending the Book Fair...
To: Aquamarine
That was a wonderful book...Cold Mountain....I enjoyed that very much even though it took forever to get through....lol...I heard they are making a movie of it and I do wish I could recall the stars...Anyone know?
To: daisyscarlett
I figured you would like it, it's about the South. Let me know when the movie comes out. I'd like to see it.

Good evening...10:25pm in California. :o)
Just finished Prisoners of Hope, a nonfiction about the American Aid Workers in an Afghanistan prison. Worth reading.
Currently reading 2 books: Flower Fairies by Louisa May Alcott (reading this with my daughter - we're making little fairy dolls too)...and Beneath a Southern Sky by Deborah Raney.
Add'l books I plan to read this summer include: Trapp Family Singers (true story of the von Trapp family), and Fenelon's Spiritual Letters to Women.
And of course I need to cover all the new books for school. Great books can be read while on a stationary bike. :o)

Good morning! (I hope!)Haven't really slept, 4 out of 5 kids had insomnia last night. I had to drink a few cappuccinos to stay awake, now I'm really wired!
I purchased America, A Patriotic Primer by Lynne Cheney last week for my children, it's wonderful. It contains all kinds of useful info and quotes from historical figures. The illustrations, done by Robin Preiss Glasser are beautifully detailed. I love this quote, contained on the last story page:
"I know that for America there will always be a bright dawn ahead."-Ronald Reagan

Cold Mountain is starring Jude Law as Inman, I think Natalie Portman as the girl, and Renee Zellwegger as Ruby.
It was rumored to have Tom Cruise as Inman, but more sensible heads prevailed.

What a great opening! Well done.
My all-time-favoritest-beach-books-ever are the Mitford books by Jan Karon!
They are so funny, heart rending and romantic...all at the same time. Whenever I pick one up and thumb through it, I'm transported back to a shady spot at the edge of the bay with the gulf breeze blowing through my hair. Father Tim is a hoot!
I also love Francis Mayes' books, "Under the Tuscan Sun" and "Bella Tuscany".
The couple buys an old villa in Tuscany and this is a journal of their travails in trying to restore it. Hilarious. The second book is about their travels around and getting to know Italy. Warning: YOU WILL WANT TO LEAVE FOR ITALY IMMEDIATELY! Her writing style is marvelous...."languid" comes to mind. Perfect hammock book.
Lastly, I love any of Sharon Kay Penman's earlier novels about Wales. ("The Sunne in Splendour"..."Here Be Dragons")
Best historical fiction I've ever read. You won't be able to put them down.
Thanks, daisyscarlett. I'm in a good mood already this morning just thinking about all these good books!

Good Morning folks. Great discussion topic for today. I will enjoy reading your posts.
To: homeschool mama
Thanks for sharing....If I ever doubted it, your post confirms that you are one heck of a homeschooler.....
To: pubmom
I plan on purchasing numerous copies of Lynne Cheney's primer America and I will give them to all the crumbsnatchers in our extended family. Thanks for the report....
To: redlipstick; Aquamarine
Thanks for the casting report for Cold Mountain. Jude Law is a great actor and will do a good job with Inman, but why did they pick a Brit to protray a Southerner (Guess they said the same thing aboutVivien Leigh playing Scarlett and that turned out just fine...lol..)
To: Timeout
Good Morning...Guess now we know why you were so anxious to get to Italy. Is that on your itinerary for your upcoming European jaunt? I have a friend who is about to make her third trip in five years to Italy. She just glows when she tells of her trips there.
I think I will take a look at the Mitford series. I love "funny" books....especially for the beach and/or vacation.
