Let me explain. Sure, I understand Elvis' historical significance. He came along at a time when popular music meant Patti Page and Perry Como, and his (then) new-fangled fusion of country and R&B effectively introduced what would become known as rock & roll to mainstream America. A lot of his early records are still exciting (thanks largely to the great sidemen he had playing with him). Props are due.

(Sinclair) Okay, now I've gone and done it: I've earned myself a permanent spot on the Elvis Presley Appreciation Society's S-List.

No. You have to first give a flip about what somebody thinks in order to put them on a list, "S" or otherwise. Even the hopelessly blind, tone-deaf, and moronic amongst us get to have their opinions.

Elvis was the step (bridge) between what was and the beginnings of rock and roll which included rhythm and blues in a whole new style. His presence, his charisma, his voice and of course his looks were all part of the package. It was that ... the total package ... that worked his magic.

The Beatles (John) said, Elvis was the one who figured in their musical style and 'he' was emulated in 'their' way.

Elvis was/is the man of his time. No doubt about it. He took songs performed /recorded by others and made them #1, or top ten, by his renditions. His gospel albums were huge sellers. He crossed barriers that others never tried or succeeded in doing.

Elvis was not able to cope with his fame and success. He went down to the basest weaknesses of his character.

Sad, indeed.

Yes, you had to be there.

But my exposure to Presley was mostly seeing him
''act'' in a series of REALLY bad movies

This is like reading a review of Paul McCartney
by someone who didn't know he was in a
band before Wings.  Get someone who's
been there to do the review. This is stupid.
