The greatest tear-jerk movies of all time?

In a completely unrelated thread, I recently got into a brief discussion with someone about tear-jerk movies.
I'm an absolute sucker for animal movies myself. _Where the Red Fern Grows_, Homeward Bound_ etc. Someone recommended _The Dog from Flanders_, but I'm not sure I could stand to watch it.
Anyway, my daughter's 22nd b'day is coming up. She has an intereset in film, and I've been thinking about getting her a selection of tear-jerk movies. Last year I got her a Leatherman, so this would seem to offset. Send her a box of those along with some Kleenex.
Any suggestions?

I remember an oldie that made me cry when I was in high school (It was an oldie then, even). I think that it was called Sentimental Journey. Anyway they kept playig that song. It may have been a Shirley Temple movie, about a little girl who is adopted and the adoptive mother gets sick and dies and she has to take care of the father who never wanted her.

This is just a thumbs up to a great movie about kids and animals...'My Dog Skip'...its all the more fabulous, because its a true story about a man and his remembrances of growing up in Yazhoo City Mississippi, and about his relationship with his dog, and what it meant to his coming of age....
Its a wonderful movie, Kevin Bacon plays the dad, and the kid from 'Malcolm in the Middle' TV series, plays the little boy...
There is a tear jerker part in the movie, when the dog gets hurt, and we dont know if he will live...and the very ending of the movie, is bittersweet, and makes me cry evey time I see it...

Brian's Song

My husband walked in the room a few minutes ago and told me to put My Dog, Skip - I told him no because I never saw it and thought he was joking, guess not.
Anyway, Where the Red Fern Grows, is another dog movie. Really sad, too. The dog dies in the end.

I've thought about _The Bridges of Madison County_, but I think she might be a bit too young that that. I thought that sucker would never end.

Do you remember a movie made in the 60's called "A Man and A Woman"?

I think that it was called Sentimental Journey. I think that may the same as Homeward Bound. I believe the original name of the book was The Incredible Journey. Two dogs and a cat travel across country, trying to make their way home.

Do you remember a movie made in the 60's called "A Man and A Woman"? Do I ever. I can still humm you the theme song. That movie is very strongly associated with my first love. It was disgustingly romantic. Him driving back to see her thru the snow?

My Dog, Skip, is to me one of the finest movies to come out in recent years, for many reasons...its a true story, the acting is fine, its a story that a both adults and children alike can watch and enjoy, and its just a bittersweet story, which I am sure, brings back lots of memories to many people...and there is not a hint of sex, or swearing, or any such stuff in it...
You should really rent this movie, and see it for yourself...

I've never seen it out in any form, but I need that movie!
I think your daughter would appreciate something a little different from the animal genre.

I am sure that everyone in your family will enjoy it...and its really more than just a story about a boy and his dog...
There are quiet little nuances to the film, where one can see the reltionship between the boys mom and dad, a little bit about segregation in the south of that time,(during WW11 era), how soldiers come back from war and coped, and on and on....
Happy viewing of this fine film!!!!!

Anyway, Where the Red Fern Grows, is another dog movie. </> That is my favorite.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn Well, I was thinking about slipping a copy of "The Thing" in there. The newer version. Some humorous relief might be in order there. After all, it's a basically movie about a dog, right?

I cried for days after seeing ST II thinking Spock was dead... I don't know whether you are serious. I will assume you are, but I tend to be very gullible. Go get yourself a copy of one of the other movies that has been mentioned up there. For that matter, Casa Blanca wouldn't be so bad. You can't really watch one of these with a dry eye. They get pretty awful in that regard.
