Why don't I get this thread rolling.......

surely we had God on our side

Now, just why would God be on the side of Slavery? Ever think that THAT might have been our downfall?

I've caught a lot of this series. It seems pretty good. Simultaneously, I'm reading "The Battle Cry of Freedom," which begins by describing the roles many of the better-known Civil War generals played in the earlier war with Mexico.

"...surely we had God on our side."

I doubt God would be on the side of slave ownership. Of course, there is much more to the southern cause than slavery. I've read a fair amount of the conflict, and I believe the south lost for three interconnected reasons:

1. The north had the extreme upper hand when it came to manufacturing war material. This is the major reason.

2. The south made a mistaken assumption that cotton was king, and as such the European powers would intervene on the Confederacy's behalf. Being Europeans, they did not.

3. Despite having superior officers and fighting men, the south simply couldn't provide the private soldiers which the north could, primarily because the north was the destination of many immigrants who became Union soldiers. The south couldn't replace its casualties and the north could many times over. Grant knew this and prosecuted a war of attrition which the south couldn't possibly keep up with.

Why did we loose

Take heart. "You" didn't loose.

But "you" most certainly did lose.

(FWIW, My ancestors helped to chase yours around most of the south.)

But I do note your invocation of God in this matter. THis is consistent with Texas' Declaration of Secession, which came right out and stated God's opinion on the matter. According to God and Texas, white men had rights, and blacks should be slaves.

Personally, I'm glad the slavers lost.

Never has been a "Civil War" in this country!

To my knowledge no one in the Confederacy sought to take control of the government of the United States.

We didn't lose! We merely called a rather longish truce to build up our technology sector.

Because the South had a hissy fit because an election didn't go as they liked. And then they started a war over it by shooting first.

In other words they acted like Democrats or spoiled children. Lincoln had not done one damn thing to them at that point. If you start a war don't whine when the other guy counterattacks and cleans your clock.

I know there were many factors that lead up to the war, so save your angry insults. That the south fired first is undisputed. And I am sick of hearing about it. Get over it.

Had it not been for the issue of slavery the Federals would've had very little moral ground on which to stand in prohibiting secession. Because of this peculiar institution and preservation of it was the actual reason that secession was sought, meant that those seeking to save the Union were left with the moral higher ground.

Why do people think Lincoln quotes are so relevant? John Brown played a far greater role in starting the Civil War than Abraham Lincoln did. Lincoln happened to be in a certain place at a certain time, just like Wilson, FDR, and George W. Bush. None of them were - or could have been - responsible for the beginning of the wars fought during their terms of office.

I started taping the burn's series and then decided it wasn't worth the it. The first night, he dug into slavery and presented a case for victimology. He fails to address many issues of the time period. His series is nothing new, just a compilation of good music and photography - that's all. TO give him more credit is a disservice to historians and scholars everywhere.

The South didn't lose, we're just re-organizing : )
