In case you missed it, the shooter left a tarot card for the police

I found alot of sites that said this

The cards from which modern playing cards are derived appeared in Europe some fifty years prior to the Tarot and are said to have originated from Islam.

Please Note: Although the Tarot was originally used to play a card game and the structure of the Minor arcana resembles modern playing cards, they are in fact two separate things. The cards from which modern playing cards are derived appeared in Europe some fifty years prior to the Tarot and are said to have originated from Islam.

I also did a search and I found Islam mentioned just once. Actually, Italy is mentioned most.

yes modern tarot reading began there in the 1500's, but many believe that it originated in Morrocco as early as 1200

My (Christian) palestinian friend came over last weekend with a bag full of tarot cards including a muslim deck that was very silly....more like fortune telling cards than tarot. The cards were shallow and stupid, I would expect muslim deck to be mystical at least.

Thanks for the ping, Poised. Do tell us more about the Muslim deck. Please ? How was it " silly " ?

The Knights Templar brought chess back with them. That IS a Muslim / Arabic game. The Tarot ? No ! The earliest known decks are Italian. The latest stories about the cards, claim that they were brought into Europe by the gypsies. Older versions, re the cards' origins , claim that they are a " picture book " and that they teach a " wisdom " / mysteries, from the ancients and the Bible.

The Tarot is a harmless and very interesting subject. If it has any connection at all with Islam, such a connection is negligible.

The Death Card in the Tarot means that something is going to end--not that someone is going to die. This is a good, healthy, and powerful symbol, similar to Shiva in Hindu and Buddhist mythology. Death precedes rebirth. Autumn and winter lead to spring. It can mean that bad things will end--illness, mistaken beliefs, anger, a problem.

Both Varanasi and Hardiwar, in India, are cities of Shiva. At Varanasi, the Ghanges River is wide and sluggish, at the end of its journey. At Hardiwar, it is narrow and rapid, at the beginning of its journey.

If some lunatic (or fanatic) has used it as part of his evil madness, it does not otherwise reflect on the Tarot. Lunatics, fanatics, and evil people pervert anything to their use.

The Tarot is not only old. It's a good thing!

Yes. Our contemporary playing card deck has evolved from the Tarot deck. The Joker (The Fool) is the only card of the 21 Major Arcana that has survived. But the Tarot deck contains 20 other archetypes just as interesting as the Joker.

A plug for one of the best and most accessible books on the Tarot, Cynthia Giles' The Tarot - History, Mystery, Lore.

The idea that the Tarot has an Islamic source is, I think, totally spurious. Not least because Islam forbids the creation of images. Also, the historical data point unequivocally to Italy as the place of origin.
