By JEAN-JACQUES TAYLOR and CHIP BROWN / The Dallas Morning News
IRVING -- Bill Parcells has agreed to a four-year contract that will pay him roughly $4.5 million per season, and will be announced as the sixth coach of the Dallas Cowboys on Tuesday, a source close to Jerry Jones and Parcells said.
The announcement will culminate a coaching search by Jones that began with two games left on the Cowboys' schedule in a meeting between Jones and Parcells on Dec. 18 at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey.
The final details of the contract, including that Parcells will have total control of hiring and firing of assistant coaches as well as a strong say in personnel and draft matters, were concluded in a second meeting Friday on Long Island, N.Y.
Parcells, who has walked away from previous coaching jobs that appeared imminent, including Tampa Bay last year, was expected to fly into Dallas on Tuesday for a press conference.
Jones said Monday in a news conference to announce Dave Campo's firing that he had no timetable to name Campo's successor but added, "I hope it can happen quickly." Jones publicly acknowledged having spoken to former Minnesota coach Denny Green about the possibility of becoming the Cowboys' next coach. Jones said in talking to Green, who is black, he was taking seriously a new rule among NFL owners to interview at least one minority candidate when there is a head coaching change.
Jones said his decision to fire Campo, who had three straight 5-11 seasons, "was not about what Dave was unable to do" but instead about a "change in philosophy." Jones said he was ready to hire a coach with previous NFL head coaching experience. All of Jones' previous hires - Jimmy Johnson, Barry Switzer, Chan Gailey and Campo - had no previous NFL coaching experience.
Parcells won two Super Bowls with the New York Giants, reached another with the New England Patriots and took the New York Jets to an AFC championship game.

Thank you, thank you! As a Cowboys fan, can I say that this is good news? That team needs some discipline and new coaches.
Cannot believe that Jones even hired Coslett -- his offense stunk!

Darn it. I was hoping Parcells would be hired by Mike Brown here in Cincinnati. The Bungles need help (2-14) and Parcells could have convinced Mike Brown to have a general manager report into Parcells and really run the team.

Seems the Buccaneers may have something to say about it. They claim parcells signed a contract with them last year!

The Dallas Cowboys have just taken the first intelligent step in rebuilding themselves in a very long time. Jerry Jones exhibited all signs of being a moron when he fired Jimmy Johnson. Many of his decisions since have only reinforced that impression. (Of course, I was as outraged as any native Texan and life-long Cowboy fan when he fired Tom Landry.)
FINALLY, we've got a coach we've actually HEARD of before and who KNOWS HOW TO WIN!!!

Source is The Dallas Morning News, NOT The New York Times. The link is correct, however. Sorry.....

I am looking forward to KNOWS HOW TO WIN!
For the person who discussed the Tampa Bay deal, if the league has a signed contract from Tampa then it means compensation for the Bucs according to Fox Sports (Jimmy Johnson), however, no one in the league office could find a copy of the contract as of last night. No contract in the league office means no official contract according to Johnson!

I was hoping for the headline
Jerry Jones Sells Cowboys to Texas Group, lol !
...but I'll settle for this.

I grew up in Ohio and cannot believe how far the Bengals have slipped. Then they shipped off Coslett to the Cowboys which made the Cowboys worse!
My relatives tell me until Mike Brown gives up some control, nothing will change. I feel the same about Jerry Jones and looking forward to someone like Parcells who can tell Jones where to stuff it!
To: MeeknMing
I could have gone for Jerry Jones sells to almost anyone!
Sure hope that Parcells doesn't back out!

That team needs some discipline and new coaches. Oh, you rest assured that Parcells will instill discipline in Cowboys again, probably the kind they haven't seen since the Landry era.
The NFC East will be an absolute dogfight for the next four years.
It is also ironic that Bill Parcells and Bob Knight will both be coaching in Texas at this stage of their careers. They are good friends who began their coaching careers together at West Point in the 1960s.
