If you two are having a disagreement of this magnitude, I recommend a duel...water pistols, filled with vodka, at one pace. Last one sober wins. The Theatrical Version could be offered to outlets like Blockbuster and Hollywood Video only. Hell, they ALREADY edit some of the films they rent.

I've been thinking that this "Extended Edition" phenomenon might turn into a business model. It would allow a "theater-friendly" version for initial release of a film, and let its DVD release get back a bunch of footage that was left out, but is ultimately satisfying. I know I've seen several films with their "deleted scenes" placed back in (chief among these are Aliens and Terminator 2. The Abyss, as well, benefits GREATLY from its "recovered" footage) and NONE were anything but improved by its inclusion.

Since a large part of a film's ultimate profit comes from its DVD/VHS/home video sales and rentals, this would seem to be a sure thing for the studios.

Apparently, even Steven Spielberg agrees, as he included both his "director's cut" AND his "theatrical release" in both his release of the E.T. The Extraterrestrial DVD and also for that of Close Encounters Of The Third Kind.

The vodka water pistols sounds fine to me but I am not sure Dan is old enough to consume adult beverages. Sorry to mess up your thread. I only planned to voice my dislike of the film & leave but who can resist a flame war in the morning? Not me! My apologies to you.

Hey, no apologies necessary (to me, anyway). when it comes to aesthetic matters, unlike political ones, one opinion is as good as another. As I said in an earlier post, it's similar to what foods you prefer...whatever the reason, trying to TALK you into liking something you don't is a waste of time.

An extreme minority of people did NOT, in fact, like the film. However, an opinion on such a thing almost CANNOT be "wrong". Lots of people liked "Jackass", too. I disagree, but their opinion regarding it is no less valid. It's far too personal.

Thanks for your thoughtful reply. I will have to bow to your & Dans opinion on the Jackass Movie, since I didn't see it.

I've been thinking that this "Extended Edition" phenomenon might turn into a business model.

Perhaps, though there's a certain likelihood that it could cut into movie ticket revenues, and a risk that people could become jaded from buying multiple DVD's.

Also, even with a decent home theater system, the movie is going to lose something in the big-screen to small-screen transition. How much would it cost to have a few 'big event' showings of the longer versions of the films?

Does anyone have any comment about the orc's bomb? My mom said the orcs didn't have any such thing in the book.

It was not as explicitly "gunpowder" and " a munfactored bomb" - unlike all the other fighting which was hand-to-hand/non-mechanical (middle ages warfare), but the idea was there.

I had the impression it was more "magical" than chemical, but this battle is the change to a new era.

The battle scenes (attacking vilalges, attacking the fortress were relatively well-played and reflected real tactics.

The bomb was legit! This has been interpreted as a bomb, I think accurately... - They just don't know what to call it:
Even as they spoke there came a blare of trumpets. Then there was a crash and a flash of flame and smoke. The waters of the Deeping-stream poured out hissing and foaming: they were choked no longer, a gaping hole was blasted in the wall. A host of dark shapes poured in.

'Devilry of Saruman!' cried Aragorn. 'They have crept in the culvert again, while we talked, and they have lit the fire of Orthanc beneath our feet.

SNIP

'But the Orcs have brought a devilry from Orthanc,' said Aragorn. 'They have a blasting fire, and with it they took the Wall. If they cannot come in the caves, they may seal up those that are inside. But now we must turn all our thoughts to our own defence.'

The gunpowder looked like coffee. Black, like maybe they burned it while it was roasting.

I thought it looked more like black aquarium gravel, very coarse crystals.

Gollum's Song from "THE TWO TOWERS"

Where once was light, now darkness falls.
Where once was love, love is no more.

Don't say goodbye!
Don't say I didn't try!

These tears we cry, are falling rain
For all the lies you told us, the hurt, the blame.

And we will wait, to be so alone.
We are lost. We can never go home.

So in the end, I'll be what I will be
No loyal friend was ever there for me
Now we say goodbye, we say "you didn't try".

"These tears you cry have come too late
Take back the lies, the hurt the blame".

And you will wait, when you face the end alone
You are lost. You can never go home.

You are lost. You can never go home.

This song plays eerily over the closing credits of The Two Towers. The singer is Emiliana Torrini and the performance is unnerving. It can best be described I think as "gothic". Her voice is clear but it is not "pretty" at all. Her web site is http://www.emilianatorrini.net/. Jackson really found the right "artist" for this task.

Yeah, I listened to that the other night and was rather un-nerved by it then, thinking about what's coming in Return of the King. There's something about Gollum that just makes you want to hug him and give him a cup of Joe - you know, help him out and fix his ills. I'm dying to see the last movie; but, I'm not looking forward to the ending.
