Here comes the PC vs. Mac flame wars!

(And I should note that Beta may have been superior to the initial grade of VHS, but VHS had the superior licensing effort, achieved ubiquity, which made it economical for VHS to make technological strides over what Beta was or might even have been.)

IIRC, the playlength of the cassettes is what really turned the tide. VHS's 120 minute cassettes could hold a feature-length motion picture (although some say the over-riding reason was that porn flicks were all on VHS, which meant tons of VHS rentals almost overnight.)
