The Hobbit Hole IV – The Road Goes Ever On…

Posted on 08/04/2003 9:43:18 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

The Road Goes Ever On…

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

Cool. I just saved that page. I tried to copy/paste to Word before I asked but only got the text - not the color chart included.

It hasn't warmed up to 80 yet here either. But, is still warm enough. Overcast thuogh. I would have liked another sunny day like yesterday! :-)

I'm fixin' to go rummage around in the kitchen and cook something for the week. Don't know what yet. But, that's my afternoon self-assignment. Food preparation. I got plenty.

FLAT FRODO has a healing, restorative stay with the elves.

Chapter 2

(continued from post 12251)

An elven house is….perfect, whether you liked food, or sleep, or work, or story-telling, or singig, or just sitting and thinking best, or a pleasant mixture of them all. Evil things did not come into that valley.

So, after Flat Frodo’s visit with the elf Wneighbor at her home in the far flung outposts of elvendom they began their journey into the heart, the most beautiful parts of the high elven kingdom. Along the way, however, they pass the valley of the rock from which Aule created the race of dwarves. Alas, all that grows from these rocks are spiney, prickley, thorny things.

Moving along, keeping on the road and traveling by day the travelers come to a strange pumping contraption. WN explains to Frodo that the substance is black gold, one of the treasures of the elven kingdom.

Smeagol requires a rest and foraging stop along the way. This is the party overlooking the Brazos river valley south of Mineral Wells. Smeagol is barely visible in the far background.

Since this is Frodo’s first trip into the depth of high elvendom, WN takes him on a side trip to see the preserved footprint of the dragon Smaug. (aka, Dinosaur Footprint in Somerville County) It is said that in an earlier era, 3 types of dinosaurs left their tracks in the Paluxy River bottom near Glen Rose, Texas. Sauropods, Theropods and Ornithopods. All three of these can currently be viewed at various places and parks in the Paluxy River in Somerville County. The Paluxy River is also a lovely place to visit for picnicking and family play.

In the same area as the dragon print there is also a memorial for the Battle of Five Armies. Actually combined memorials for the all central Texans lost in each war in the 20th century. These memorials stand in the front lawn of the Somerville County courthouse.

Finally Frodo and WN arrive at a destined meeting with the Beornings. There is a fine dinner. Much talk and reveling. As the meeting is at night, Frodo feels he must take appropriate precautions with the Bear-Man, having recalled Bilbo’s warnings of the wanderings of Beorn at night!

In our next installment, Wneighbor takes Frodo into the Angle, the much discussed but seldom located area which is the home of the Rangers.

Yeah, I'm kinda partial to prickly pears myself. You can always do like me and get one tattooed on! LOL

OTOH, you could get a spineless one and plant it at the new house and have napalitos anytime!

Hi WN!

I am tired. Every part of my body hurts. And I have three hours of studying and homework that I have to do.

The picnic was dreadful. I hate children. I also have a hard time helping with young adults with mental retardation. Ugh. And now I have to watch my siblings while my parents take my sister back to school.

Ugh.

OH Jen! I'm sorry your day was so bad. I was hoping you would get to the picnic and find something fun about it. Too bad it was so much work!

Guess you've got your work cut out now with all that homework and child care duty. Sorry, it's kind of a bad end to your weekend.

Yeah, it is.

On the bright side, my dinner is beef, coated in garlic powder and crushed red peppers, wrapped in bacon and broiled. I like cooking for myself!

And I'm not even going to try any homework until I've eaten and unwound a little. I guess I can leave one thing until Tuesday evening when I should have an hour or so... and I can move studying for tests to Thursday... that leave me with maybe two hours work...

Hey, do you know of a motorcycle association called ABATE? I saw about six couples in leathers at the grocery store. Their jackets all said "ABATE" and most have WWJD decals too, and they looked really nice types, so I was wondering if it's a Christian biker thing?

ABATE is a nationwide organization promoting bikers rights and safety. Here in Texas our activity with ABATE is very much centered around Helmut law issues. (Biker's Rights) But, also ABATE provides updates to members to keep us updated about pending legislation or court cases which infringe on rights. Also, is active in providing riding training in some states. In Texas we have a motorcycle rider's training program but other states ABATE has approved programs for that from what I understand. Basically, anybody with an interest in biker issues can become an ABATE member. When you are a member they give you a patch - with your membership fees of course.

It's a cross club organization. Outlaws, Christians, weekend warriors and just regular people that like to ride are members. Meetings and rallys are interesting because you see a REAL interesting mix of folks! :-)

Only if Jesus was opposed to mandatory helmet laws.

Cool, thanks for telling me! I was sure you'd know.

Hey, I finished the homework I want to turn in tomorrow. Yay me! I've accomplished something today! Now I'm going to take a ten minute break... read some funnies, find some ice cream...

Wasn't there something about "blessed are the idiots who ride around at 60 mph without any protection at all on their heads, for they shall see the Kingdom of God pretty darn soon"?

Or am I going to get smote?

Only if Jesus was opposed to mandatory helmet laws.

Only helmut law Jesus supported was the Helmut of Salvation. Other than that, He called for Grace.

Can't tell where I stand on this can ya? :-)

60 MPH is pretty slow Jen. But still if you crash, a head injury is probably not going to be what kills ya. Don't want to go into stories though. Too many of 'em. Too many friends gone - helmut was not issue.

Not from me. Helmets are good. Helmet laws, I'm not so sure. I always wear my seatbelt in the car (I'd put in a five-point racing harness if the feds would let me), and I didn't need no steenkin' law to tell me.

Personally, I'd prefer the free market to handle the situation. ER doctors can tell if you had your seatbelt or helmet on in a crash. All the insurance companies have to do is say, "this is what we cover if you were wearing safety equipment, and this is what we DON'T cover if you WERE NOT wearing safety equipment". But too many people prefer the Mailed Fist of the government to the Invisible Hand of the marketplace.
