The Hobbit Hole IV – The Road Goes Ever On…

Posted on 08/04/2003 9:43:18 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

The Road Goes Ever On…

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

Well, I got the boys in the back yard with their lawn chairs and we just observed Roy for a while. She was vey listless...pacing and going into odd corners of the yard. The other three chickens just ignored her.

Suddenly, she made a bee-line for the coop. First she climbed up in the top nest box and didn't seem to like it because she got out and got into the bottom nest box. Jar Jar came in and like stood sentry for a while, but then she left and she and the buff orpies went and roosted on a tree limb under a tree.

I swear, 20 minutes at least went by, then out pops Roy. She gets a drink and then wandered out of the coop. The boys and I went over to the nest box and YIPPEEE!! Another perfect medium-sized brown egg, still warm from the hen!

I'll take a picture here in a sec...

I swear I won't be reporting in and taking pictures on every single egg these chickens lay...but this was special! We practically witnessed the blessed event!

LOL!!

Is the cityscape much degraded because of missing trees?

A lot of the stately old oaks are gone. I haven't been thru the Fan or down Monument Avenue. But what I've seen looks more like thinning than complete devastation. 'zat make sense?

Ohhhhh!!! Thanks Corin! I am ridiculously proud of these chickens, I know...

Ok...here is the egg...Matthew went in the coop and fetched it...both boys held it for a while to feel it's warmth, then I brought it in the house and took this picture, less than half an hour ago.

Now, here is the egg compared to a regular store-bought medium egg...

Isn't it beautiful??? That's how clean it is, fresh from the hen! Has a beautiful sheen to it, really glossy, not buffed looking like the store bought.

It isn't much smaller than the store-bought medium egg, is it? I wonder if she'll be laying large eggs by next spring.

Very pretty.

Whose pumpkin is that in the background?

I know! From what I understand, most pullets lay very small first eggs...large marble-sized! So I'm excited that she's already laying pretty good sized eggs!

That's Matthew's pumpkin...Joshua picked those apples at the orchard (where they had the hotdog party I bought all the stuff for but couldn't go to because of the campout).
