Looking to buy a semi-auto handgun in CA

I have finally convinced to Mrs. to allow me to buy a gun. I have been to the local gun dealer that rents guns to use in the indoor range. I really like the H&K 45 USP. My purchase would be for protection and going to the range. What do you guys think of the H&K 45?

The HK USP is one of the best made ever, I have one of the first six 9mm's in Illinois, no problems ever, just make sure it isnt too big for your hands, it has a larger than average grip

I purchased a H & K 45 a couple of months ago. I have enjoyed shooting it. Easy to strip and clean. Costly... Mine set me back @$800

I have the compact version, and I love it. I carry it more, by far, than any of my other carry guns.

to "allow" you to buy a gun? What, isn't it your house?

A 1911 or variant might be a better choice. A Kimber, older Colt Gold Cup, any model well worked for reliability and durability. I prefer standard capscity to hi-cap models, lighter and easier to hold for most woemen if the need arises. Parts and accessories are abundant and repairs can always be had with thousands and thousands of both amatuer and professional gunsmiths thouroughly familiar with them.

I'm not very familiar with the H&K, but it has a rather decent reputation.

But the one you should get is the one you like the most after comparison shooting both.

If you are not familiar with firearms, buy a revolver.
It takesd thousands of rounds of practice to learn to instinctively clear a jam or misfire in an auto.

No, it took me 5 years to deprogram her liberal ideals. She bought into that crap that you are 1000% more likely to get killed with your own gun , blah, blah. Now she sees otherwise.

I showed her the gun safe that fits in the wall. That way the kiddies can't get to it.

Great thread...

I just opened a licensed sports aparell/novelty shop. Lots of cash transactions.

What's a good "concealed carry" handgun, we wear khaki's and polo type shirts. I leave the mall with substantial cash.

I think that I can get permitted here in Missouri...any ideas?

I like your choice of calibers but it may get a little pricey for a person just starting.

If you buy it because all of the bells and whistles are right where you like them, the grips fit you, the trigger feels right and the sights are easy to acquire, your next step would be finding some ammuntion that works.

I like Federal Hydra-Shoks and my son likes Speer Gold Dots.

I tried one out at the gun shop. The grip is good for me.

Before you lock up your guns, make sure your children have a healthy understanding and respect for firearms; including gun safety, what happens when a gun is fired and how to shoot.

I got a nice little bonus at work and the G.W. tax credit for my two youngsters. So, I have the cash for it.

I live in a rural area outside of the S.F. Bay Area and it is patrolled by the Sheriff dept. If I ever had to call 911, it would be long over before the Sheriff showed up. I want to be able to protect the wife and kids should I have to.

On those rare occasions that I carry, I use an S&W Model 60 Chief's Special. Compact, powerful, and simple to use. Just pull the trigger. No worries about whether there's a round in the chamber or if the safety is on. True, it's not considered to be "what's hot" these days, but no one questions the power of a .357 Magnum, or the reliability of one of these Smiths. With "Laser Grips" the gun is very accurate, too.

The simplicity and inherent safety of a revolver can be a lifesaver.

LOVE my 1911 Kimber Custom! I don't know if it is my affection for the one I own, better construction, or what, but I shoot noticably better with my Kimber.

She's WAY too big for CCW purposes, but I don't let a little thing like THAT stop me! ;^)

You can carry a cannon with the right clothes.

My son and I both carry Springfield Armory V-10 .45 Autos. He carries the Compact and I carry the Ultra-Compact.

We both use Galco Royal Guard IWB holsters with a Wilderness Instructor's belt. It's important to feed the straps on the holster through the belt loop on the seam.

A next size bigger shirt outside the pants with a square bottom or T-Shirt finishes the rig.

To help balance the load, carry an extra magazine on the opposite side.

Last word of advice. The spare mag can be standard no matter what the capacity is on the gun.
