I'm currently reading Paul Theroux's latest book "Black Star Safari"...he travelled from Egypt all the way down to Cape Town (I'm about halfway through the book now.) Africa is an absolute mess according to him. It would appear to me from reading his book that things were better for everyone there under European "colonization."

The British left the best footprints. Look at the countries that were former Spanish and French (oh yeah the Portugese) colonies. Were it not for christian missionaries brought in by the English governments I think situations would be worse. Colonies away from Africa have fared much better.
