The Confederates had attacked ships before any agreement was made between the Buchanan administration and the rebels, so they had a thing about attacking ships.

The #3 fighting Union sailors would stand on the rolling deck of a sailing ship or a rowboat and fire muskets back at the cannons. In the case of the #3Viking warriors, they would throw their axes which were the inspiration for tomahawk missiles.
