Alabama governor calls for Aruba boycott

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Alabama Gov. Bob Riley called for a travel boycott of Aruba on Tuesday until authorities on the Dutch Caribbean island cooperate more fully with the family of a Mountain Brook teenager who has been missing since a graduation trip in May.

Riley asked the governors of the other 49 states to join him in urging a boycott of Aruba on behalf of the family of Natalee Holloway, an 18-year-old Mountain Brook High graduate last seen on the island May 30.

Her mother, Beth Holloway-Twitty, joined Riley at the Alabama Capitol for the boycott announcement. She contends Aruban authorities have failed to adequately investigate the possible murder of her daughter, who was with a teenager, Dutch national Joran van der Sloot, and Surinamese brothers Deepak and Satish Kalpoe on the night she disappeared.

They were held for a time and released.

Yes, I believe she had some street smarts. As pretty as she is, she's had boys doggin' her since Jr. High.

I must say, I've been dodgin' hurricanes since July, so I stopped following the story closely. I don't know about any taxi.

I do believe van der Sloot & the Chalpoes are guilty of something - they acted guilty - but I don't know what.

Also, I do support the boycott of Aruba because of the inept or corrupt investigation.

My point earlier was this: The Holloway/Twitty family was responsible for allowing Natalee to go on the trip . If the trip had been to Somolia, Iraq, Or Pakistan, they would have rightly denied her the trip, as these places are just too dangerous. Well, Aruba turned out to be a dangerous place as well, as are most places you are not familiar with. It was a bad decision - we all make them.

My guess is that Beth T was given numerous assurances from the chaperones as to their determination to watch & protect the students. Where were they that night? They share some responsibility for failing to do their jobs properly.

But, the bottom line for me is we are all responsible for our children's welfare until they become responsible for themselves. Whether the Aruban police find out what happened is secondary - she is missing & presumed dead.

(Was that a corrupt investigation?) Maybe just stupid.

(Was evidence destroyed by the investigators?) Even the body
had to be discovered by non-investigators.

They haven't found her dead on the island, so I think she was sold into sex slavery personally. Just my guess.

Screw em. I hated their brand of moralistic, condemning, legalistic garbage when I was 17 and I hate it even more now that I am 50. Personal responsibility? Sure. All for it. Actions have consequences? Agreed and could not agree more. However, most of this crap though is simply the kind of stuff I used to hate God for, till I found out that He isn't really like that, it is just that some of the people that speak for Him have decided to bandy about in the name of "wisdom."

In other words, it's all personal for you.

Excuse me? I haven't slipped up any. You are the one making a fool of yourself IMO.

You are right. Noone knows what happened to her. Just like noone knows what happened to Nicole Smith and Ron Brown. We just know she is missing like we know they are dead. We can of course connect the dots, but when you are a celebrity, or judge's son, no scenario will bring justice.

Like several other posters on this thread, when it comes to this case, you dont know crap from crisco! You are quick to blame and condemn Natalee and let the America hating Arubans who perpetrated this crime and now the Aruban officials who are perpetrating the cover up off the hook. That is disgusting. I suggest that you take more than just a casual look at this case before you denounce Beth and Natalee again. There are many of us who have followed this case from day one and your ignorance of the facts is appalling.

Wonder how they would feel if it were THEIR kid.

I don't particularly pay much attention to those the media uses to distract people from important stories.

This story has had more air time given it than all crimes committed in the US COMBINED. Why is that? Who is that benefitting? Would it be done if the girl had not been beautiful or the mom lovely? No obviously not.

What is remarkable is that so many people here who generally understand why the media does what it does seem to be utterly oblivious to the real story. And it is not about Aruba at all. This is ONLY a distraction.

You might want to at least learn to spell her name right. It's Natalee.

My child would have never been on such a trip so your malevolent wish will have to remain unfulfilled. This sounded so stupid an idea that I could not believe a responsible parent would have allowed it.

There are thousands of people who lost loved ones through horrific crimes still unsolved over the last year but they are ignored. Why? Why have you and all the "concerned" not raised hell about them? Where are all the demands to boycott LA, NYC, Chicago since their police forces have not solved THEM.

This is a perfect example of how the Treason media controls the gullible. And you lap it up as though it has some real national importance.

I think the Treason media definitely looked around and decided it was a perfect place to set up shop and pump this story for all that it was worth.

Had it occurred in some pit the interest would have dissipated faster than a puff of smoke on a windy day.

I can't believe people are still falling for the media's scams in pushing this story. No wonder the RATS keep getting elected.

While I desperately try to avoid this story (after the first thousand hours or so) I did hear claims by the hotels that they were providing rooms free for the family.
But whoever is telling the truth does not change the fact that this story is so disproportionately covered it is pathetic. And most of the coverage provided NOTHING new at all.

It is apparent to me that they are working from a personal agenda. Their points about taking responsibility for ones life are valid in a different context and I agree with them. But , when you apply it to this case and Natalee in particular, it doesn't meld with the facts.Natalee in no way is responsible for her own death and to suggest otherwise is very revealing about the person suggesting it.

I agree.

And now this, the Aruban government is asking if Bush supports the boycott.

Touche... I failed to make the last part of my point though. In both cases these weren't even really college students. They were high school grads getting ready for freshman year. One made it and was snatched. The other didn't even make it. You're right, it can happen here as well as there. But at least they caught the guy here.

While it is true that criminals can target whomever they chose, actions taken by their intended victims are what they use to determine their actions.

When a person allows themselves to be alone, in a foreign country, while associating with strangers for a week, they open themselves up to targeting that otherwise would not be so focused.

Like electricity takes the least path of resistance, so di criminals.
