Report: Syria agrees to hide Iran nukes
World Tribune ^ | December 20, 2005

Posted on 12/20/2005 10:47:51 AM PST by West Coast Conservative

Syria has signed a pledge to store Iranian nuclear weapons and missiles.

The London-based Jane's Defence Weekly reported that Iran and Syria signed a strategic accord meant to protect either country from international pressure regarding their weapons programs. The magazine, citing diplomatic sources, said Syria agreed to store Iranian materials and weapons should Teheran come under United Nations sanctions.

Iran also pledged to grant haven to any Syrian intelligence officer indicted by the UN or Lebanon. Five Syrian officers have been questioned by the UN regarding the Hariri assassination, Middle East Newsline reported. "The sensitive chapter in the accord includes Syria's commitment to allow Iran to safely store weapons, sensitive equipment or even hazardous materials on Syrian soil should Iran need such help in a time of crisis," Jane's said.

The accord also obligated Syria to continue to supply the Iranian-sponsored Hizbullah with weapons, ammunition and communications. Iran has been the leading weapons supplier to Hizbullah, with about 15,000 missiles and rockets along the Israeli-Lebanese border.

The accord, negotiations of which began in 2004, was signed on Nov. 14 and meant to prepare for economic sanctions imposed on either Iran or Syria. Under the accord, Jane's said, Iran would relay financial aid to Syria in an effort to ease Western sanctions in wake of the UN determination that Damascus was responsible for the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

Iran also pledged to supply a range of military aid to Syria. Jane's cited technology for weapons of mass destruction as well as conventional arms, ammunition and training of Syrian military.

Teheran would seek to upgrade Syrian ballistic missiles and chemical weapons systems. Under the accord, Iran would also be prepared to operate "advanced weapon systems in Syria during a military confrontation." Jane's said.

"The new strategic accord is based on the existing military MoUs, with the addition of the sensitive chapter dealing with cooperation in times of international sanctions or military conflict," Jane's reported.

Should look closely to see if Saddam and Syria had the same agreement....and at the same time, think again about the convoys of trucks departing Iraq into Syria in the days before we invaded. Hmmm?

How about I ping a bunch of the forum military types to your comment about how we don't have what it takes to win this war? Where's YOUR nerve?

Do it. Many of them would agree. The Marine ('61-'65 SEA) that I'm staying with over the holidays sure thinks so. We don't have what it takes. 20% of the Dems are making daily remarks that are clearly treasonous and there isn't one single Pubbie with the sack to say so.

We knock the crud out of the Republican Army then let the captured soldiers go instead of incarcerating them. We let insurgents pour over the Syrian and Iranian borders when we more than have the technology needed to shut those borders down. The Patriot Act is getting gutted and the President's and Republican's response is to negotiate. Our border is wide open four years after 9/11. We search old Swedish women instead of young Arabs. We let Super-RINO McCain make a big media splash with his anti-torture bill that accomplishes nothing in terms of changing actual policy in action but appeases the far left. We find tons of WMD goodies and hosts of Al Queada terrorists in Iraq but the Bush administration (and all the Pubbies) can't seem to find anything to counter the commie press and the commie Dem pols.

That's not a winning strategy for a war. It's half-stepping.

And we killed or captured a helluva LOT MORE Foreign terrorists than we ever captured Iraqis. Face it General, you don't have a clue what you are talking about. You don't know the situations over there (other than what the MSM feeds you which is interesting considering how you profess to be a conservative) and you don't know the people you are dealing with.

And he isn't outing himself as an enemy of the state by advocating the annhiliation of the "blue parts" of this country either.

"NUKE THE BLUE ZONES" was a rather popular tagline after the 2000 elections. No one got zotted for it that I know of.

It wasn't funny then. It isn't relevant NOR funny now and you WOULDN'T say it unless you meant it. So therefore, YOU are an enemy. Just like Osama. Hope you like it.

"If Syria and Iran have reached this accord as reported...it inevitably makes even more credible the widely-held belief that Syria made a pact to help Saddam hide his WMDs..."

I just don't buy that. If saddam had them - why wouldn't he have used them? He's dead now. He used them when there was no threat to his life (Halabja 1988), if they were there in 2004 I am pretty sure he would have used them then too. Without hesitation. I just don't buy the Syria has them thing.

Neither am I loosing a moments sleep over that fact. Saddam is out of power. The world is better off.
