So do I understand correctly that President Bush supports the purchase of facilities at six of our major ports by UAE companies?

You are only partially correct. They are not just UAE based companies; they are UAE STATE owned companies.

It is incumbent on the president to make the points that some freepers are trying to make with their research and suppositions.

Yes, it is -- him or his surrogates, although whatever the President says carries more weight and is more widely reported.

I called the White House and my congress critter's office today expressing my opposition to this deal. My congress critter is Rep. Jane Harman (D-Moonbat). I told her aide that I really am a Republican who has never voted for a Democrat in my life. I told them I don't like Democrats and have opposed Harman every time she's run for office. I told them I love this President, but this is one time I can't support him.

On our local radio news when I was at lunch, I happened to catch an interview of Harman saying she is opposed to this deal. So I told her aide this is one time when I agree with her. Unfortunately, the aide sounded gleeful, but there's nothing I can do about that.

When I called the White House, I told them pretty much the same thing.

And that's just it......
The Bigotry and racism exposed here is making us look like utter fools in this game. And Bush has chosen the high, non-racist road. The same one I'M on.

Would we be better off with US Companies running these ops? Absolutely...
Then ask yourself WHY there are no US Companies in the business of Managing Large Port Operations......

It must be a tough choice for some----having to choose between seeming insensitive on the one hand, or being a complete idiot on the other.

I don't know who the "complete idiot" is, but at least you have Jimmy Carter on your side.

''The overall threat to the United States and security, I don't think it exists,'' Carter said on CNN's The Situation Room. ``I'm sure the president's done a good job with his subordinates to make sure this is not a threat.''

5) It's a good thing, economically speaking

When national security is the main concern, your 5th point can only be seen as a red flag.

Yea...this is so sad. I was thrilled when W declared his intention to ~spend~ his political capital. To me, that meant taking a strong stand against the odds for some important conservative ideas and carrying the day.

This is peeing away political capital. Spectacularly peeing it away. I can not believe that even a man as stubborn and impulsive as our sometimes conservative president will stick with this and watch himself sink to complete irrelevance as everybody just jockeys for the next election cycle. Sad.

the port authority of NY and NJ will NEVER go for this. you know that, since 9/11 sentiments run strong here. the union dockworkers will shut the facility down first. the governors of NY and NJ know this, they will move to cancel these contracts if this merger should go through.

February 1999: Bin Laden Missile Strike Called Off for Fear of Hitting Persian Gulf Royalty

Intelligence reports foresee the presence of bin Laden at a desert hunting camp in Afghanistan for about a week. Information on his presence appears reliable, so preparations are made to target his location with cruise missiles. However, intelligence also puts an official aircraft of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and members of the royal family from that country in the same location. Bin Laden is hunting with the Emirati royals, as he did with leaders from the UAE and Saudi Arabia on other occasions (see 1995-2001). Policy makers are concerned that a strike might kill a prince or other senior officials, so the strike never happens. A top UAE official at the time denies that high-level officials are there, but evidence subsequently confirms their presence.

there will be. Bush has just tossed the republican congress, standing for re-election in 2006, into the toilet. they are on their own now, and must act accordingly.

Not true. He did that on the Mexican border / illegals issue.

The UAE / ports issue is the "courtesy flush".

"P&O doesn't want to be in the "biz" anymore, which is why they're selling."

If the sale doesn't go through, then, you're saying that they're going to just shut down and retire, lol? Not going to happen. I have no issue with the Singapore operation, which was in a bidding war over P & O up until early this year.

When the President is right, and doing the right thing, there is no need for 'strategery,' a term of which I am sick anyway, and the public requires no explanation.

On the other hand, if the administration is serving interests other than those of national security and safety, then maybe that is why we the people don't 'understand' what is being arranged by those who 'know more' than we do.

Yes Bush is doing such a great job protecting our land borders. Let's make sure that they can bring in a whole boatload of bad $hit instead of a backpack full.
