ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE (AP) — President Bush says the deal allowing an Arab company to take over six major U.S. seaports should go forward and he will veto any bill that would stop it.

"The Bush Administration is simply the Clinton Administration with slightly cleaner rugs."

This, along with all the luvvy dubby with beelzebubba is making think you've hit the nail squarely on the head!

the ports were already run by the British

...who didn't kill 3,000 people. Do you see a difference? Or are you just of muslim descent and find this personally offensive? nothing personal in this question.

i'm of austrian/german decent. arabs aren't a monolithic group to be discriminated against. it makes more sense to befriend the moderate ones and kill the extremist terrorist ones...unless you plan a worldwide genocide?

But we joined with Pakistan after 9/11, and they helped us destroy the Taliban.

The USSR was our sworn enemy, and now they are a moderate ally. Other enemies became allies, and allies became enemies.

9/11 changed things. The UAE is now our partner in the war on terror.

Yes.

This would be his first and only veto attempt...and in a rash way, too, which indicates that national security is of no real concern...the CFIUS review was token, at best.

A veto now, that likely gets overidden, would effectively be the end of his presidency....And he doesn't even seem to know it. He would have performed Hari-kari...and self-destructed with the Base. That Base which has hung with him through thick and thin.

The Conflict of Interest charges alone, after the explosion of the Abramoff Scandal, should have been enough to derail this.

Not to mention the grave National Security hazard that letting port control pass to a "state-owned" entity, whose state regards the Taliban as the legitimate government of Afghanistan...or that Israel should be wiped out...still.

And isn't Al-Jazeera operated out of the UAE?

Some "ally" in the War on Terror.

This behavior by GWB evinces either a political death wish, or dementia.

"And what if some members of the new management are al Qaeda sympathizers who can tell terrorists where the security holes are?"

That is EXACTLY what is wrong with this deal. That anyone can defend it shows how little they are interested in the defense of this country.

No, it wouldn't. The UAE isn't going to influence the procedures, rules, and activities of US Customs, the Coast Guard, DHS, and their unions. It simply is not going to happen.

They don't have to influence the procedures. However, they will have a front-row seat regarding port security. All it would take would be for a couple of sleeper sympathizers to report back to AQ where the biggest security holes are.

And recall that the 9-11 hijackers were largely college-educated men. We're not talking ship hands here, but people capable of getting a management job with a Dubai-based company.

OH please...you know what I mean....I don't care if he gave the janitorial services to the Arabs...they hate us...they will use any kindness against us....this is the gateway to our Country...they should have NOTHING to do with it.

But I will say this, President Bush had better be on his "A game" to explain this to the American people, and that has been his problem lately, he has not done a very good job of selling his ideas.

I grant you that there are lot of legitmate concerns and questions requiring careful explanation and reassurance.

Well, I just heard from President Bush, and it's a GO for him. He thinks it would send a terrible signal to our friends and allies NOT to go ahead with this deal. (He's not listening to the American people on this..no matter how uninformed he perceives we are..)

As he was speaking BULLITEN FLASHES ON FOX.. the Gov. of New Jersey will file actions in STATE and FEDERAL courts to block this transfer of operations control at Port Newark in New Jersey.

A showdown is underway.

Sorry to say he's sounding a little arrogant on this. Just explain to us why this is a good idea.

Cmon BushBots... Lets hear you explain this away...

The obvious conclusion is that this is part of some backroom horsetrading and deals going on to advance the War On Terror.

Maybe you are unfamiliar with the UAE's proximity to Iran, which we are likely to attack (but probably not invade) sometime within the next few months, and which will probably lead to a war with significant collateral damage.

Not that the professional knee-jerk bitch and moaners would bother to think that through, in their near gleeful rush to once again shout "Betrayed! I told you so! We are doomed! I am the only one with wisdom!"

All those who know all the details on this matter, raise your hands.
Good, all those FR folks who think they do have their hands in the air and can't type. :)

LOL. Best comment so far!

Has he lost his mind?

No, he is actually one of the few who are holding on to reality. If the country followed most of the suggestions it really would find itself isolated and out of business and quickly.

The DP World company didn't kill 3000 people either. The americans who work for DP World, and serve on the board, and as managers, didn't kill 3000 people.

Muslim terrorists killed 3000 people. They were already in the U.S., they didn't hijack planes from airports run by a UAE company, the hijacked planes run by our own government.

Maybe we should turn our airports over to a country that DIDN'T allow the planes to be hijacked -- it would make as much sense as what you are saying.

Oh, the Gov of New Jersey is going to block a sale between the Brits and Dubai? LOL!

This just gets funnier by the moment.

"No, management would NOT be from Dubai, it would be from the same U.S. subsidiaries that manage the ports now."

He who pays the piper calls the tune.
