It IS a mystery. What moves this man? The bribes we know of were relatively small, surely (?) not enough to purchase the sadistic pleasure he exhibited in mangling the truth and executing a helpless woman by torture.

Maybe as a boy he was a weakling and a sissy who got beat up by all the other boys. Maybe he's waited all his life to be able to beat up somebody -- and it turns out to be a girl who cannot even lift a hand to defend herself from his attack. He is odious.

Judge Greer's pale optic nerve may also be in play. With pale optic nerve comes neurological and progressive brain dysfunction.
