"What race are they talking about?"
Their own, and only their own ... never mind that there is no such "race." They're mestizo, a mixture of indio (native) and white, Spaniard males. Somehow, their European surnames and ancestry don't register as being pertinent, especially when territorial aspirations and potential government largesse are concerned.
