Weird that an argument is being put forward stating that since none of us are perfect, we cannot criticise Mel. In that case, we might as well close up shop here on FR, since we do some criticising.
If Mel had used the word "Christian" where he used the word "Jews," one wonders if so many here would still be willing to give the guy a pass.

The question was about Hutton Gibson's view of the Catholic faith. "My father never lied to me."
So we are to take that statement as meaning that Hutton Gibson never lied about the Catholic faith, but he might have lied about other things?
You're stretching. You know very well how Gibson meant his statement.

BS. When you are drunk is when your true feelings come out.

What you're not getting is how much pleasure this is going to give those who claimed that Passion was going to charge up the pitchfork crowd. I can't wait to read Krauthammer's next column. I remember his crazy rant over the movie--and he didn't even admit to being drunk.

He was .4 over the line for crying out loud. If he is the Alkie like you say he is, that isnt nothing.

A group of people whose job it is to protect Jews were upset with Gibson's portrayal of Jews. They called him on it. He argued back..they argued back...all the way it was supposed to be done. GIBSON SAID JEWS WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL THE ILLS IN THE WORLD. Looks like maybe old Abe was right with his assessment of Gibson's motivation in making this film. NOW, whether that's true or not is now moot...because by saying what Mel said last night, he cannot defend himself any longer. HE SCREWED HIMSELF. GET IT NOW?

After drinking alcohol on Thursday night, I did a number of things that were very wrong and for which I am ashamed. I could have written this on many Friday mornings ;-)

Please give me a specific example of Rush being anti-semitic? He has stated how he loves Netanyahu, some Israeli general that he met, and several Jewish friends who are cigar smokers. Give me a specific example of Rush being anti-semitic to back-up your cheap-shot charge.

Some drunks are really mean, some are lovable, some cry. I hate the mean ones. Luckily, I haven't dealt with this since for many years.

Which one are you referring to? ;-)

Please see my earlier apology to the other guy. I forgot to finish my thought, and it changed the meaning of my post considerably.
BUT, for what it's worth, my family spent 800 years getting killed and persecuted by the Engish, right up to when my parents came to the US, so please don't paint with such broad strokes. Hatred is what it is, and among other things, it is contageous. Best to you and yours.

Nobody is a saint but it is irrelevant.
I don't buy the argument that you have to be a saint to see what someone else is doing is reprehensible.

Yeah, you're absolutely right. The "See, I was right all along about him" crowd is in full cry today.
To: Hildy
Nothing. WORDS MEAN THINGS. We all know how he really feels. I truly don't think there's anything he can do that won't make it worse. So what you're saying is, no apology or amends would be acceptable to you? Wow. Are you that unwilling to forgive the people you actually know, or is it just strangers?
To: SamAdams76
BS. When you are drunk is when your true feelings come out. A recently departed very dear relative of mine used to call it "liquid courage". It was only when she'd had a few drinks that she could stand up to her verbally abusive husband.
In Mel's case, it was "liquid anti-Semitism".
To: dfwgator
That statement is pure damage control.
And he does truly hate the Jewish people.

He can go to hell?
For making comments when he is intoxicated, he should burn in hell forever? Wow.
You just not say something wrong and out of control here and you are sober.
He should not got to hell. We are going off a police report and though I trust 99% of police officers, there are some that are bad and more than a few that exaggerate. We have not seen definitive proof of exactly what was said, yet Mel is being condemned to hell. I hope I never get in trouble and you sit on my jury.
I am pretty sure Mel said some things but do we know he said these exact things? I do not know. I have two brothers currently police officers, one that retired four years ago after 28 years, and I worked in investigations for 11 years myself.
Mel did commit a crime of violence where he intentionally harmed someone when he was sober. We all make mistakes, and I have made my share. I will forgive him, yet he will have to seek help for his alcoholism and do some positive things for his community and show he has no ill will towards Jews.
