They will forgive him in time. All the moreso since they are of the same left-leaning Party.

If Mel said derogatory comments about the Jews what would you suggest he do to make amends? Seriously. Take a course in Jewish history somewhere. Overcome his ignorance, which seems to be something he inhereted from his dad. Maybe go live on Kibbutz or in Orthodox community for a while. Make a movie about a great Jew or Jewish cause or historical story. Those are a few ideas that pop to mind.

Sad.
But some good things.
He admitted he was wrong immediately, didn't try to deny it happened.
He took personal responsibility for his stupidity, no excuses.
He apologized to the law enforcement people that he said stupid things to.

Drunk driving is a really irresponsible thing to do. If someone wants to drink and say stupid things, I guess they can do that.
But when they get behind the wheel of vehicle, they instantly start getting others involved in their stupidity.
I hope Mel and others like him can tame their beast.

viscousness of the feelings

Who ARE you??? It's just crazy to call the responses here "vicious" (not viscous!)
viscous |?visk?s| adjective having a thick, sticky consistency between solid and liquid; having a high viscosity : viscous lava.

Vicious is killing or maiming, etc. Vicious is not being suspicious of an espoused (though drunk) Jew hater.
Grow up.

I understand. What would you suggest he do to make amends?

"As for what Mel Gibson said when he was drunk, I could care less. Everyone says things they regret when they have too much to drink, and I believe his apology to be 100% sincere."

Agreed..

Nothing. WORDS MEAN THINGS. We all know how he really feels. I truly don't think there's anything he can do that won't make it worse.

He's ashamed that his true views came out for everyone to hear.

Alcohol and drugs contaminate what is contained in the heart. I forgive him and hope he gets the help he obviously needs.........

I quit drinking around ten or fifteen years ago, don't really remember when. The biggest reason I quit was because I didn't want my children to see me drunk. During my drinking days, I did a LOT of things that I shouldn't have. Fortunately, I was living in New Orleans, so nobody else noticed. Remember the opening of Heartbreak Ridge, when Gunny Highway is in jail for urinating on a police car? The only differences were I urinated in the driver's side window, not on the hood, and nobody caught me.

That was many moons ago (beyond the statute of limitations, BTW). I've been drunk. I've been stupid. I've been drunk and stupid. Gibson made a full apology and took responsibility. Nobody was hurt or killed. He didn't use that stupid third person apology "It was terrible that these things happened," like he was a bystander and talking about something someone else did.

I've probably needed more Grace than most people on FR. I'm not going to claim high ground on Gibson because I CAN'T claim high ground on him.

BTW, bet his mug shot wasn't as good as Nolte's or Glen Campbell's.

Nah, you don't get it. You're awfully quick to attack people. Just like this Mel Gibson guy.

No, I am defending someone who has showed that he is Pro Life, Pro Catholic person.

Exactly how respectful of someone else's life is an alcoholic who not only takes a drink, but drives home after drinking?

I am perfect.....therefore you too should be perfect.
If I was just as smart as you I would tell you all of that in Latin.....but alas, I am only mortal.

Yes, Mel could make a great movie about the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. Maybe then, I will believe he is sincere.

While I may forgive him for being drunk, but if the guy is an antisemite, that's not really forgivable IMO.

It's a good thing your forgiveness isn't required. I trust God to make that call.

Luk 23:34 Then said Jesus, "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do."

If God can forgive those who tortured and crucified his son, I pray that He will forgive Mel for his boorish behavior and hurtful words.

I don't care how much of his politics you agree with. The man is not a saint. He appears to be a reckless drunkard endangering others on the roadways, a bully with no respect for the law or those whose job it is to enforce it, and a Jew-hater.

He can apologize for what he said and did and show sincere repentance. I will give him time to do that and I will be the judge of his sincerity. Otherwise, he will receive no forgiveness from me and I will pray . . .

"Father, forgive them not, for they know what they do."

So what do you suggest? Should we crucify him? Stone Him? What do you think? I think we have a very tormented man. He is fighting many demons. I hope he gets the help he needs. I won't condemn him just yet.
