So who owes whom an apology?

Do you believe that Jews start all the wars in the world.

We may as well find out who is sympathetic to Gibson's racism.

What's Mel's count of dead Jews just now.

He should apologize for what he said, and that should be the end of it. If Jesse Jackson deserves a pass, so does Mel Gibson.

babydoll22: Wouldn't you be upset if the Jews had crucified one of your best friends?

That has got to be one of the most bizarre posts I've seen on Free Republic . . . ever.

It boggles the mind and beggars the language.

RE the comments on the thread that none of us are perfect, that's true. I'm willing to think that Mel is an OK guy, perhaps, but the worry is that his comments indicate a side of him that is not too attractive. While I may forgive him for being drunk, but if the guy is an antisemite, that's not really forgivable IMO.

Being a practical sort of guy, the thing that I don't quite get is that here is someone who has a reputation to protect, knew he was at risk of a relapse, and being easily able to afford other options (call a cab - hire a limo - he could *buy* a limo company every day for the rest of his life and it would be a rounding error in his net worth) still chooses to drive to an event where he would be at risk of drinking, and them attempts drive home drunk.

We are not to judge hearts. We ARE to make discerning, wise judgements about actions.

Oddly enough the statement of Gibson's does not confirm that what he said was the anti semitic remarks attributed to him. I am making no assumptions about his exact quotes until written verification of the report is supplied by the arresting officers or until Mel admits it himself.

He has in the past made remarks which are very ugly about certain females he has known.( in a 1995 interview he called a female assistant he once had a C***T). But I have never read any anti-Semitic slurs by him. His father, yes, but not Mel Gibson.

Even when his movie the Passion was decried by prominent Jewish leaders Mel did not rant about " Jews causing all the wars or make other anti Jewish remarks" so why now?
It just does not make sense.

If he did make the remarks then by all means an apology is necessary. It would also be helpful if he publicly stated that he does not agree with his father's view about Jews taking over everything from the Federal Reserve Board to the Vatican. He should also receive some kind of community service to work with holocaust survivors and their families. Plus a very big donation to organizations that fight anti semitism would not be remiss.

No, I am defending someone who has showed that he is Pro Life, Pro Catholic person. I am not so quick to throw people under the bus for a mistake like this.
Who here has not gotten drunk and said or did something he/she should not have? If you said no, I applaud you for constraint.
And if we are in a bible thumping mood, what about He without sin cast the first stone, or is that something that only applies to someone else.

Actually, I thought his statement sounded acceptable.

I'm willing to wait and see.

Totally different than Kennedy's initial statement a few months ago.

We don't judge a person's ultimate destination or the outcome of their lives. Not judging a person's immediate actions is plain foolish.

"I stood up for Gibson to you and a number of my Jewish friends. Now, I'm sorry I did."

I'm not sorry I sided with Gibson's producing of "the Passion". It was historically and Biblically accurate. Gibson endured an incredibly long and vicious assault from numerous Jewish organizations and individuals who worked feverishly to censure his movie under the ridiculous pretense that it would stir up dangerous "anti-semitism". As Pope JPII, a real friend of the Jews said of Gibson's movie: "It is as it was". As for what Mel Gibson said when he was drunk, I could care less. Everyone says things they regret when they have too much to drink, and I believe his apology to be 100% sincere.

But what's really interesting now is that we see the re-emergence of those who hate Gibson crawling out of the woodwork to attack him again, spewing their own hatred as they point a self-righteous, hypocritical finger at Gibson.

I have never seen such deplorable behavior as I see from some attacking Mel Gibson who admits he has been battling alcoholism throughout his life.

If he took a drink, he's not battling alcoholism.

Anyway, nobody gives a damn what he's been battling. If he'd hit and killed somebody, would the victim's family care that he was "battling alcoholism"?

That quote is taken out of context. The question was about Hutton Gibson's view of the Catholic faith. It was not about Hutton Gibson's view of Jews. Gibson was remarking that his father had taught him the faith not that his father had taught him about Jewish conspiracies.
