Over the 25 years, none of these ex-smokers developed severe COPD. That's a better rate than those who never smoked. Hmmm....

wow... who'd a thunk that inhaling a mixture of irritants, mutagens, and toxins could have serious health ramifications for a significant percentage of those who do so.
Yet another study from The Center for Figuring Out Obvious Things /rant
though I guess the actual percentages weren't obvious, along with the recovery rate after stopping smoking

That is GOOD NEWS! I used to think it was a 100% certainty to develop COPD and about as high to get Cancer!
Guess that proves again to limit reading of the MSM...Too much misleading information being published for my tastes.
BTW, what is the REAL news on the Economy and the War?

So 25% get COPD and out of that 25% how many die from it?
Reread the article.

Bottom line: If you can quit smoking - quit.
If people would take better care of their health, maybe those of us who do wouldn't have to subsidize those would constantly go to the doctor for avoidable problems driving up our insurance rates.
Then again, better to raise your fist in defiance claiming smoking is just fine.

All the defenders of smoking will make snide comments here and I too take studies like these with a grain of salt.
Having said that though...
COPD is a horrible way to die. I watched my mother-in-law die from it, drowning in her own fluids and it wasn't pretty.
Yes, she was a life long smoker.

36% of all the subjects died; 1.25% of all died of COPD; at the end of 25 years, the survivors ranged from 55 to 85 years of age; short of knowing what the rest died of and at what age death occurred, COPD would seem to be the least of their worries.

There are a lot of other diseases smokers get. Losing your teeth is not even considered a disease but it's pretty common.

A new study finds that at least 1 in every 4 smokers will develop progressive and incurable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a much higher risk than previously believed.Isn't it interesting that of all the smokers I've ever known, only one (my dad), ever got any type of lung disease? The folks I know must just be extra lucky or something.

Frankly, I find it amazing that only 25% of the people who smoke for 25years get COPD.
I wonder why?
