The Candidate (Rudy Giuliani in NH)
The American Spectator ^ | 1/29/2007 | Philip Klein

Posted on 01/29/2007 1:36:27 PM PST by Dark Skies

Many skeptics continue to question whether Rudy Giuliani is serious about making a run for the White House, but it was abundantly clear on Saturday that he had come to Manchester for more than the sub-freezing temperatures.

Addressing over 500 activists at the New Hampshire Republican Party's annual meeting as part of a two-day swing through the state, Giuliani sketched the broad outlines of what looks like a presidential run. Sounding at times like a motivational speaker, Giuliani cautioned against cynicism and pessimism in the wake of November's election results and challenges in the ongoing War on Terror. The message especially resonated with the audience in this critical primary state, where the Republican Party just lost control of both chambers of the legislature for the first time since the 1870s.

"The best way we remain safe and we retain our freedom...is remaining on offense, remaining strong and not becoming weak in a time of pressure," Giuliani said in a line that drew the biggest applause from the crowd at the Palace Theater.

... and I think it should be spelled out to members: No supporting Rudy Giuliani ... even if the party does.

At this rate I'm wonder if any Republican can win. We can't get together behind one person

The election is a friggin' year off. It's a bit early to be lamenting that.

And it would help if so many in the GOP were n ot pushing two guys at the far left of the party who have backstabbed the party in the past and whose supporters diss core concerns of so many of the base in the GOP.

Let us not borrow trouble. Who knows where this election will be 2 months from now?

No supporting Rudy Giuliani ... even if the party does.

Rudy didn't support Pataki in 1994, even when the party did.

Loyalty is a two way street. It's a lot harder for someone like Rudy to demand such when he hasn't practiced it in the past.

If I remember correctly, Jim Rob did not support Bush before the primaries. But he voted for Bush.

What about that?

The Republican party is backing Rudy running as a Republican.

Is this now a site where we can ONLY support some Republicans but not others?

Here, let's try this. Do you think that Rudy Giuliani agrees with the following Party Platform plank on illegal immigration that calls for better security, immigration reform, background checks, english language, etc.:
Today's immigration laws do not reflect our values or serve our security, and we will work for real reform. Undocumented immigrants within our borders who clear a background check, work hard and pay taxes should have a path to earn full participation in America. We will hasten family reunification for parents and children, husbands and wives, and offer more English-language and civic education classes so immigrants can assume all the rights and responsibilities of citizenship. As we undertake these steps, we will work with our neighbors to strengthen our security so we are safer from those who would come here to harm us.

Is this where Giuliani stands on immigration, dealing with the illegal aliens who are already here, and securing the border?

Are you saying you want the 33% plus who currently support Rudy?

Do you want us to NOT support your candidate?

Essentially, you're telling us you don't want our vote.

Well I have to say that if Rudy is the Nominee for the Republican party in 2008, I am NOT voting for him. I am voting for Mario Cuomo

Same difference, eh? Maybe I should research Cuomo's views on the various issues in my chart and post a custom chart comparing Giuliani and Cuomo.

Whoop-dee-do! So he had a title. That still doesn't make him the right person.

You said he worked in the shadows. He did not - he was a Commitee Chair on a very vital committee.

We need a leader who'll speak up and be a great CIC and win the war, who has the guts to take the witch down and fight to close the borders. Rudy fits that bill.

He didn't do so great against the witch in the 2000 Senate race.

Hunter is a one issue candidate who very few have heard of.

One issue?

I can understand concerns about Hunter's need to gain name recognition, but do you have to lie about him? He is pro-border security, pro-WOT (he has a son fighting in Iraq), and pro-doing-something-about-China. Just for starters. He is a stalwart for this country.

BTW: If you decide to respond to this post, please try and do it in a civil way without the name calling.

If you quit lying about Hunter (or other candidates), I'll be more civil. You can't have it both ways.

I'll put my Republican credentials up against yours ANY day. First, lets see if you're an actual member of the Republican Party or not. Your turn.

I am a Republican and am one of the few in my district in Queens, NY. Actually the lady at the voting booth laughed good naturedly about me being a Republican because she thought she was the only one. I've been a Republican since I voted for the first time for Ronald Reagan.

If RUDY isn't the center of gravity right now, then why has this thread gone over a thousand replies? Can that be said for any other possible candidate, and he hasn't even declared yet.

Maybe its hard for '-', to get a thousand replies?

The people who knew Reagan best and are in charge of his legacy determined that Reagan liked Rudy Giuliani and respected him enough to give him the Ronald Reagan Freedom Award.

The museum foundation in charge of all that also gave King Hussein of Jordan the same award. In know he's dead and all, but do you propose we dig up his corpse and run HIM as the GOP candidate?

Ask Rudy. He's the guy who endorsed a Dem for guv in 1994. He seems to be the expert at when it's OK to support a Dem when you are a pubbie.

If I had still been in NY I wouldn't have voted for PATAKI either I would have just gotten the heck out of there, and I miss my native Brooklyn! :)

So far, all we've heard about Rudy's positions on national issues is what Spiff has chosen to interpret for us.

Oh, Rudy has said and done tons of things that let you know his positions on national issues. You're just not paying attention or are intentionaly ignoring it. You'd prefer to base your decision on whatever his campaign consultants can get away with putting on a bumper sticker, in a piece of slick campaign literature, or in a 30-second TV spot. You have to be SPOONFED what his positions are because you're too damned lazy to go look it up like I did.

I am wondering why so many people are pushing Rudy and McCain, given they are far-left in the party and have backstabbed the party in the past.

Do you want us to NOT support your candidate?

No, I want you to reconsider what, for some reason, you think is a winning strategy. To run a guy that cannot hold the party together.

Essentially, you're telling us you don't want our vote.

No, I'll telling you that you're planning on driving over a cliff and the built-in-air-bags won't be much help.

I am a Republican as well. I started voting for Reagan in the California gubanatorial elections.

The real issue here is the party is lessening it's emphasis on social issues. And the next election we need a person tough on terror.

And I think the people who call themselves "real conservatives" here need the 32%+ who are voting for Rudy to their 2% choice of Hunter.

Ah, so you think it's OK to not vote for the pubbie in major elections, eh?

The Rudy school of party loyalty. Loyalty towards me, but not from me.
