If you drove through the City of Hull (about 1 hour from my house) on Friday or Saturday nights, you will see gangs of kids roaming around the streets or loitering outside late night convenient shops. Almost invariably they live on 2 problem estates (projects) - Orchard Park and Bransholme.
An American observer would be amazed; these brats dress like Afro Americans, right down to the sleveless tops with ‘Lakers’ or ‘Cilppers’ on the front, those baggy trousers (my Missus calls them dihorrea catchers !) and pit bull dogs. They even try and use ghetto slang, though a Detroit rap spoken in a Humberside accent can’t help their image surely.
Yet Hull has a very small community of Indian and Chinese, who mainly run small businesses. I have met their kids and the are well educated, well mannered, and speak better English than me !
Yes you are quite right - it’s not your surroundings that make the difference it’s what you want to make of your life.
