Thompson Played Grant _ No Hero in South
AP via SFGate ^ | 11/13/7 | Jim Davenport

Charleston, S.C. (AP) -- Fred Thompson has gotten a lot of mileage out of his movie and TV fame as he runs for the Republican presidential nomination. And on Tuesday, speaking at The Citadel military college, he made sure to mention one of his recent roles: president of the United States, in the movie "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee."

But that wasn't all good for someone campaigning in the South.

"Some people say I've got a little making up to do," he said. "The last role I played when I was in the movies — I played Ulysses S. Grant." That's the Northern Civil War general who went on to become president. But it could have been worse.

Actually he did the equivalent of fire bombing German citiesin WW2

The plantation system supported the war effort and Sherman took it out.

Re: Thompson Played Grant _ No Hero in South

Talk about liberal SFGate crap... the last film role Ronnie Reagan played was Jack Browning, a real rich, double-crossing POS SOB in 1964's The Killers.

And it did not seem to hurt him at all in the South, who, BTW, don't really like rich, double-crossing POS SOB like the Clintons at all!

Oh be serious here, that's exactly the types of things that supported the armies of the time. Sorry if your great, great granddaddy was involved. My father's people were from Florida so maybe mine were too. On the other hand my mother's people were from the north. Either way it's irrelevant. Sometimes you need to stand back and let the military do what the military does best... kill people and break things.

Uncle Billy would have pacified Iraq good and proper.

Maybe, not sure. What he did worked to starve an army but an insurgency might be something different entirely. There was some anti-terrorist battles fought during reconstruction though that were pretty interesting.

Actually my parents were on the ground just outside Dresden, being evacuated from the East and the onrushing Soviets, watched the firebombing from a railroad siding. I don’t dispute what Sherman did didn’t help end the war, it was just kind of indiscriminate.

He played Grant. Big Deal. They think The South is still full of Dixie singing KKK types

I don't think most southerners with more than two brain cells to rub together have anything against Grant. Grant always treated his Southern counterparts well. His terms for surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia were quite equitable. They are, in their entirety, below, just as they were written by Grant and received by Lee.

Rolls of all the officers and men to be made in duplicate, one copy to be given to an officer to be designated by me, the other to be retained by such officer or officers as you may designate. The officers to give their individual paroles not to take up arms against the Government of the United States until properly exchanged; and each company or regimental commander sign a like parole for the men of their commands. The arms, artillery, and public property to be parked and stacked, and turned over to the officers appointed by me to receive them. This will not embrace the side-arms of the officers, nor their private horses or baggage. This done, each officer and man will be allowed to return to his home, not to be disturbed by U. S. authority so long as they observe their paroles and the laws in force where they may reside.

They think The South is still full of Dixie singing KKK types

Not too many KKK Types, I've lived in Texas for 30+ years, and while I've heard of some, I never met any. But what's wrong with singing Dixie? It's a great tune...although I'll admit I found the enthusiasm which which Texans, of several ethnic groups, sang it at the first large Independence Day celebration I attended in Texas... somewhat surprising. I believe it '78 or '79. We're talking a large crowd, filling up a large (5A) high school football stadium.

Let's see now.... First, we learn that Thompson is bereft of any "fire in the belly", then we hear that he is saddled with a "trophy" wife, and now... now we receive the shocking news that he once played a Yankee general in a movie!!!

Hangin' is too good for this man!

Can you imagine what the situation in Iraq would be like if we had Grant, Sherman, Lee, Longstreet, Stewart, and Jackson over there! Or how about 'Black Jack' Pershing, Patton, Bradley, and McAuliffe.

Although General Petraeus is kicking tail and taking names, and Tommy Franks did an outstanding job with Afghanistan and the initial push into Iraq, so I guess you could say that we do have our own versions of these great leaders.

He was also the voice of Andrew Jackson in the TV movie Rachel and Andrew Jackson: A Love Story.

And this was interesting:

Barbarians at the Gate (1993) (TV) .... Jim Robinson

But if any role is going to get him in trouble it would be "charismatic racist Knox Pooley" in three episodes of the CBS show "Wiseguy" in 1988. More here.

But really, people who do vote know the difference between television acting and reality.

Longstreet was married to either Julia Grant’s sister, or cousin.
