“Republic” was the de facto situation if not de jure. It doesn’t stretch my credulity at all.

This wikipedia tidbit backs up your point IN SPADES:

“On June 1, 1964, Kenyatta became President when he successfully had Parliament amend the Constitution to make Kenya a republic with his office becoming executive President: the head of State, head of Government, and Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces.”

DU is working this angle

These were just upon first glance and took me a total of about 20 minutes to find:

http://www.scribd.com/doc/18018714/03118509265 1) The photograph has three resolutions embedded. The highest resolution is for the paper. The second highest resolution is the fabric background. The lowest resolution is the text.

2) Mis-spelled the name of the village that Obama's father was born in as "Kanyadhinng" instead of Kanyadhiang".

3) Gave the age of Obama's father as "26". He was born in 1936 and thus could not have been older than "25".

4) The certificate number is given as "47,044" which is remarkable considering that Barack Hussein Obama was 47 years old when he was sworn in as the 44th president of the United States.

5) Most damning of all, the font used is Schmutz, which was invented in 1995.

There is some evidence that Kenya was preparing to become a Republic prior to the official event on Dec. 12, 1964.

“Following the announcement in August that the Government would soon submit for approval a comprehensive set of amendments designed to transform Kenya into a Republic …” This Source Is Refering To August 1964: 3rd paragraph down - The Role Of The Senate In The Kenyan Political System - by J. H. Proctor, Jr.

Then there is this entry in Wikipedia on Jomo Kenyatta under Leadership (5th paragraph down.)

On June 1, 1964, Kenyatta became President when he successfully had Parliament amend the Constitution to make Kenya a republic with his office becoming executive President: the head of State, head of Government, and Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces.

I don’t put a lot of faith in Wiki but it was this entry that had me looking elsewhere to confirm. I still have found nothing about the June 1, 1964 event.

NYT article from Aug. 15, 1964 Kenyan Leader Announces Plans for Republic

Wiki isn’t always something you can “take to the bank” but in this case it backs up a common sense interpretation.
