A Georgia mother who was arrested for allowing her 10-year-old to get a tattoo said she had no idea it was illegal for him to get one, even with her consent.

When Chuntera Napier’s son Gaquan Napier asked her if he could get a memorial tattoo for his 12-year-old brother Malik who died after being hit by a car, Napier was touched by the request.

“I always thought that if a parent gave consent, then it was fine,” she said. “How can somebody else say that it’s not okay? He’s my child, and I have the right to say what I want for my child. I can’t go tell anybody else what I want for their child.”

A Georgia law from 2010 states, “It shall be unlawful for any person to tattoo the body of any person under the age of 18, except a physician or osteopath.”

Police say that Napier has refused to cooperate in naming the tattoo artist who could also be prosecuted for violating the law.

What’d he get? L-O-V-E on the fingers of his left hand, and H-A-T-E on the right?

By what lawful reason would a physician or an osteopath need to tattoo a person under the age of eighteen? By what lawful, coercive reason would they do this?

A tattoo artist certainly should be aware of the laws regarding tattoos. Why did the tattoo artist agree to do it?

Just wondering what kind of work she does. Tattoos are not cheap nor are those hair styles.

I'm sure such a well-spoken young lady has a very well-compensated profession.

Chuntera, Gaquan, and Malik. I didn’t even need to look at pictures to know.

Why can’t lawmakers come up with more ways to solve problems instead of more things to ban?

If you get a tattoo that young it’ll probably look like a rorschach blot when you grow older

Because the client wants to and it doesn’t hurt anyone else?

Are you in favor of disfiguring 10 year olds?

As long as there are idiots who would do this to a child, there ought to be a law against it, right?

I don’t suppose there would be any arrest problem if she got her daughter an abortion.

Laws do not solve problems. Societies, particularly churches, solve these types of social problems.

If laws solved problems this would be nirvana and the IRS would have made us all rich.

First let me state, I am not in favor of children getting tattoos.
BUT -
I think this is a parents rights issue. If a parent says it’s ok - then I don’t know why the state is involved?
It’s not like drinking or drugs that harms the child or someone else.
It’s not like they are going to put her in jail as a consequence.
Is this really that widespread of an issue to spend the resources to fight?

Perhaps. But they will always keep the memory of their brother with them at all times.

For the most part, tattoos are identifiers. Of what, I won’t expound upon.

Could be used for radiation treatment. When my motherIL had treatment, the radiologist tattooed small X in each of the spots to be targeted.
Maybe they mean something like that.
